Dr. Rima introduces an interesting Bloomberg article and discusses some of the latest Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) developments in this Health Freedom USA Blog entry. Dr. Rima and Gen. Bert are traveling for the next several weeks, meeting with various food NGO and agency representatives in countries that want to protect their citizens, under the Precautionary Principle, from untested and unlabeled GMO products. This International Decade of Nutrition investigative tour will culminate at the Codex nutrition committee meeting in Canada, at the beginning of May.
Interesting Bloomberg article yesterday entitled, Big Bucks at Stake. What is remarkable is what Bloomberg recommends in the article… But first some background. The United States FDA approves GMO foods and feeds without any safety testing of significance. Early on in the process of releasing GMOs, the company which owns the patented gene provides the FDA with whatever edited data it chooses to show that the organism in is “safe”, no matter how weak, contrived or meaningless that data is.
No further safety testing is carried out by the FDA, nor are further safety data reviewed, IF they exist.
But, in the largest involuntary human experiment ever conducted, with zero informed consent possible, the world’s food, as it comes through the US food system, its seed system and its feed system, is contaminated with unlabeled, un-traceable GMOs. Any long term (or, for that matter, short term) effects will never be known because who is eating what GMO gene, promoter virus or bacterial marker sequence is totally unknowable. This is the effect of FDA refusing to require “truthful and not misleading” GMO labeling. In deed, the agency, in a true display of the arrogance of power, believes it has authority to censor even “GMO Free” labels!
At the forthcoming Codex Alimentarius Committee on Food Labeling (May 3-7, Quebec City, Canada), the US will, once again, use it might, military and economic power, to try to prevent GMO labeling anywhere in the world.
The article below neatly sums up many of the dangers we are facing if we allow GMO crops and animals, foods and feeds, to exist in our world. Because their DNA is unstable and contagious, there is, in fact, no long-term co-existence possible between non genetically modified plants, animals, insects and, indeed, people, and the modified ones. Does any company have the right to modify the genetic make up of the planet for profit and control? The Biotech industry, of which Monsanto is a particularly horrifying example (but whose horrors are shared by Bayer Crop Sciences, Syngenta, Pioneer, DuPont, Pfizer and a host of others) believe that they have bought that right by patenting genes. The science upon which these patents rest is totally inaccurate and invalid. None the less, the practice will continue unless, and until, nations and individuals take the science seriously and ban or boycott anything which contains GMO or has been fed GMO, is made with, by or trough GMO technology or profits the companies which own these patents.
But to voluntarily boycott these “Franken Foods” we need to know what products contain GMOs and what products are GMO Free. We pledge to do our due diligence best effort to recommend only GMO free products to help support the work of the Foundation.
There is little time left for those of us who believe that genes cannot be patented (since they are not “new and useful” inventions, but rather simply recombinations of existing DNA data, available in nature and free for anyone to discover) and that the biosphere itself must not be contaminated.
Through Big BioTech’s enormous marketing propaganda campaigns, which include providing large funding (through fees and grants) to industry, government and university scientists alike, tainting them all with unresolved conflicts of interest, it is very difficult to find unbiased information and Codex Alimentarius, of course, contributes to this condition by continually permitting ever-growing encroachments by industrial toxins and the like into the food chain.

April 24, 2010 Bloomberg reports:
“At stake are the costs to farmers who produce $80.3 billion a year in corn and soybeans, used in products ranging from Coca-Cola to cattle feed to ethanol. “Monsanto has become such a dominant player in the seed business that producers have real concerns that the price they pay for seed is going to be anywhere near reasonable,” said John Crabtree, a spokesman for the Center for Rural Affairs in Lyons, Nebraska, a nonprofit group that provides services to farm communities. “The fear is that the sky’s the limit.”
These fears are not unfounded when you consider that prices on everything from the seed to the obligatory fertilizers and pesticides that are required to make the GM seeds “grow properly” have skyrocketed.
According to a report by Charles Benbrook, chief scientist at the Organic Center in Boulder, Colorado, the influx of genetically modified seed has steadily ratchet prices upward. Seed used to be fairly inexpensive, in large part due to the practice of planting seed collected and saved from the previous year. With GE seeds, this ancient farming practice is no longer employed and farmers must buy new seed each year.
The 2009 Organic Center report, titled The Magnitude and Impacts of the Biotech and Organic Seed Price Premium, states that farmers who purchase Monsanto’s Roundup Ready 2 soybeans in 2010 will pay 42 percent more per bag than they paid just last year.
This is in stark contrast to the overall rise in soybean seed prices over the last 25 years, which was 63 percent. Between the years of 1975 and 1997, soybean farmers spent four to eight percent of their farm income on seeds. Last year, those who planted GE soybeans spent 16.4 percent of their income on seeds.
The story is the same for GM corn growers, who will pay just over twice the amount for the latest eight-trait “SmartStax” corn seed, compared to those planting conventional seeds. And GE cotton seed now cost nearly 6 times more than conventional. The report shows that the GE seed price premiums FAR exceed the organic seed price premium, across the board, for various crops. This should be an eye opener for anyone who still believes genetically engineered crops are the way to inexpensively feed the world… [Emphasis added – REL]
The only one who is truly benefiting, it seems, is Monsanto, who ended their fiscal year in 2009 with revenue of $11.7 billion. Over $7 billion of that came from sales and licensing of seeds and seed genes. [Emphasis added – REL]
So, is growing GM crops REALLY in the best financial interest of most farmers? Or are they simply being hoodwinked by fancy marketing that promises increased yield and reduced pestilence? Benbrook asks the same question, and has called for further studies to evaluate whether or not GM crop yields warrant the disproportionate difference in price. If previous studies are any indication, I believe the answer is no.
GM Crops Yield Unimpressive Results
In reality, GM crops create previously unimaginable profits for sub-par performance when compared to conventional or organic crops. And when you review the potential danger these crops pose to human and environmental health, the list is so disturbing you could easily say we’re all paying for poison when we buy GM food products. After 30 years of GMO experimentation, the data to shows [All emphasis added below – REL]:
* No increase in yields; on the contrary GM soya has decreased yields by up to 20 percent compared with non-GM soya. Up to 100 percent failures of Bt cotton have been recorded in India. And studies >by scientists from the USDA and the University of Georgia in 2008 found that growing GM cotton in the U.S. can result in a drop in income by up to 40 percent.
* No reduction in pesticides use; on the contrary, USDA data shows that GM crops have increased pesticide use by 50 million pounds from 1996 to 2003 in the U.S., and the use of glyphosate [Most frequently marketed as Monsanto’s dangerous herbicide, Roundup (c) – REL] went up more than 15-fold between 1994 and 2005, along with increases in other herbicides to cope with rising glyphosate resistant superweeds.
* Roundup (C) herbicide is lethal to frogs and toxic to human placental and embryonic cells. Roundup is used in more than 80 percent of all GM crops planted in the world.
* GM crops harm wildlife, as revealed by UK and U.S. studies
* Bt resistant pests and Roundup tolerant superweeds render the two major GM crop traits useless. The evolution of Bt resistant boll-worms worldwide have been confirmed and documented.
* Vast areas of forests, pampas and cerrados have been lost to GM soya in Latin America.
* Epidemic of suicides in the cotton belt of India. According to the National Crime Records Bureau of India, more than 182,900 Indian farmers took their own lives between 1997 and 2007 as a result of failed GM crops. It estimates 46 Indian farmers commit suicide every day. * Transgene contamination is completely unavoidable, as science has recently revealed that the genome (whether plant, animal or human) is NOT constant and static, which is the scientific base for genetic engineering of plants and animals. Instead, geneticists have discovered that the genome is remarkably dynamic and changeable, and constantly ‘conversing’ and adapting to the environment. This interaction determines which genes are turned on, when, where, by what and how much, and for how long. They’ve also found that the genetic material itself has the ability to be changed according to experience, passing it on to subsequent generations.
* GM food and feed linked to deaths and sicknesses both in the fields in India and in lab tests around the world.
How Can YOU Stop Monsanto from Ruling, and Ruining, the Food Supply?
Allowing Monsanto to monopolize the market could have lethal consequences for all of us. Because not only is Monsanto doing what it can to eliminate competition from other agricultural biotech products, their end game is to do away with conventional seeds, period. As I’ve discussed in many previous articles, this is a threat to human civilization and would spell disaster for the entire planet. Fortunately, you don’t have to be directly involved in the legal or political end of the battle.
You, as an ordinary citizen, still have the power to make perhaps an even GREATER difference in how business will pan out for Monsanto – by steering the market demand toward non-GMO crops and foods. Every time you choose to buy a non-GMO product over a product that contains GM ingredients, you are making a dent in the empire that is Monsanto.
While you’re waiting for the leaders of the world to catch up, take advantage of local sources of organic foods as often as you can. You can also avoid GM foods by:
* Reducing or Eliminating Processed Foods. Some 75 percent of processed foods contain GM ingredients. Use the Non-GMO Shopping Guide, available for free at www.NonGMOShoppingGuide.com.
* Read produce and food labels. When looking at a product label, if any ingredients such as corn flour and meal, dextrin, starch, soy sauce, margarine, and tofu (to name a few) are listed, there’s a good chance it has come from GM corn or soy,unless it bears the USDA organic seal.
* Buy organic produce. Buying organic is currently the best way to ensure that your food has not been genetically modified.

But we are not finished, not by a long shot. Others believe that the current partial victory for our Push Back efforts is enough for us to stand down, focus on other things. They may be well intentioned but, as we said when Sen. John McCain’s S 3002, a veritable poison pill for supplements, was abandoned, we were pleased, but we, as the old saying goes, “were not home yet”. Well, once again, we are not home yet. S. 510 must be defeated if we are to protect clean food, fend off total industrialization of our food supply AND protect our supplements.
And Now, Here Are the Details
Well, the Senate has reacted to your PUSH BACK yet again, and yet again, has given us dangerous half-way measures at best. WE SAY THIS IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
Take the Action Item above; ask everyone you know to tell Congress: “NO! to the forced industrialization of our food supply!”
Back in 2007 when Sen Ted Kennedy gave Big Pharma his dying bequest… what it wanted most, more power — as Dr Ron Paul puts it, “to abuse” — we warned everyone that the FDA could not be trusted. That was when we had been told by various politicians – and even some misguided “health freedom groups” that it wasn’t “necessary” to have protective language added to the Kennedy “FDA Enabling Act” because, after all, they solemnly (and naively) assured us in DC, dietary supplements were not even mentioned in the bill. We said we didn’t trust FDA and that we wanted Dietary Supplements and Natural Remedies protected from enhanced FDA power. We persisted – YOU persisted – and we prevailed in the conference committee, with the help of hundreds of thousands of your emails, in keeping Section 1011, which exempted, and thus protected, dietary supplements, in the bill.
Nonetheless, within a year or so of that bill passing, FDA used its new Section 301(11)* power to ban interstate commerce in any food substance that had ever been studied for medical use in order to ban Pyridoxamine, a non-toxic form of vitamin B6. What gives the FDA the power to do this? Can you imagine why the Congress of the United States would believe it had Constitutional authority to deny food substances to any free people? Perhaps to perpetuate a Pharmopoly (pharmaceutical monopoly…)? Corruption and bribery, campaign funding and favors, perhaps? From the largest single lobbying force in the United States, perhaps? Conflict of interest, perhaps? Hmmmmm…
So in January of 2009, Pyridoxamine was banned. That’s right, banned. A natural, non patentable, safe and historically proven vitamin was banned to the American public. Despite its long history of safe use as a dietary supplement, it was not protected by section 1011 because, FDA says, no one “proved” it was grandfathered under DSHEA (the Dietary Supplement Health and Eduction Act of 1994)… and just because the substance was on the Old Ingredients List didn’t prove anything, blah, blah, blah… (Substances on the Old Ingredient list had always been considered grandfathered in under DSHEA, which holds that nutrients and supplements are to be treated as foods and, as such, cannot be limited or banned unless they are unsafe.)
The Other Shoe? Wait No Longer!
The FDA, which Dr. Rima refers to as the “Fraud and Death Administration, is about to drop the other shoe and ban more forms of B6. This time, the Phamopoly intent is blatant, since the “Citizens Petition” by the drug company involved actually states:
“Pharmaceutical companies developing new drugs must be protected from companies that may seek to market the ingredients in those drugs as dietary supplements. The marketing of such products has the potential to undermine the incentive for the development of new drugs because many people may choose to purchase the supplements rather than the drugs.”
Go back and read that quote again. The enormity of this is literally mind boggling! Instead of tossing this absurdity out, the FDA is, as always, playing the tune its Big Pharma masters demand.
So what does this have to do with the Fake Food Safety Bill, S.510?
Everything. You may recall that your million+ email PUSH BACK recently defeated Sen John McCain’s attempt to force Codex Alimentarius dietary supplement restrictions on us via his fake dietary supplement “safety” bill, S.3002. That bill died one month and one day after it was introduced… a real PUSH BACK record!
But, as we predicted and feared, attempts were made to include the worst parts of S.3002 in a revised effort to get S.510 passed. We saw that one coming, although, once again, others who should have known better, told us we were crazy. Once again, we asked you to message Congress through the Natural Solutions Foundation Action Item. Many hundreds of thousands of emails later, it appears that S.510 will be amended to “protect” DSHEA products. That sounds good ….
But That’s Not Enough.
Here’s what IS good enough: We want natural remedies and holistic techniques (like Holistic Ear Candling, for example) and all natural, local, community, family and farm food production protected too… better yet, DEFEAT S.510!
Please use this revised Action Item to make sure the Senate knows we are not happy… yet! If you have taken action on this issue, take it again since the Action Item has been revised to reflect the newest ploy on the part of the food destroyers. Please take it once for each member of your household and then pass it along to everyone you can reach with a simple note saying that this issue is of grave importance to you and you hope it will be to the person you are sending it to as well. Ask them to take action in the same way and then forward it to their circle of influence in the same way.
PS * With referenced to Section 301(11) — where Congress violated our Constitutional and human right to freedom of choice in accessing any non-harmful food substance an individual chooses — our position is simple: this tyrannical power must be repealed by Congress (with apologies to We the People) or voided by the Courts!
Food additives are regulated by the FDA and USDA. These two organizations have the power to make sure you food is clean, wholesome, accurately labeled and free of both filth and contaminants. But, tragically for freedom, food and your health, they do not.
Instead, they bow to industry pressure to lower standards, hide contaminants and toxins, thus increasing the dangers of foods to consumers, the unimaginable horrors of food production at every step along the way, agricultural labor, factory food operations, slaughter, harvest, processing, and, finally, the horror of what that food does to you and your loved ones: the preventable, needless and tragic diseases that cost us our lives, our health and, ultimately, our freedom to make other choices.
Even organic standards are degraded both by the USDA and Codex (which are, in many ways, one and the same) to the point where they are becoming meaningless, with virtually unlimited GMO contamination permitted in the US, more chemicals permitted in the production of organic vegetables, fruits and animal products and a softening of procedural safeguards and product restrictions in those standards – all unlabeled, of course!
And deeply embedded in this slavish subjugation of real regulation and protection, corruption and callous disregard of our health and that of our planet, is Codex Alimentarius, http://www.codexalimentarius.net/web/index_en.jsp, the United Nations Commission which sets up standards and guidelines covering every single bite or drink of food, every nutrient, every swallow of everything that can legally go in your mouth except drugs.
And who runs Codex? Basically, the US, in cahoots with the EU, decides what they want and then bulls it through the process to ratification by the annual Codex Alimentarius Commission.
The Natural Solutions Foundation attends some of the huge numbers of Codex meetings each year (there is one just about every week somewhere in the world) and what we see is that the US is serving its lethal constituency, the Bigs: Big Pharma, Big Agribiz, Big Biotech, Bic Chema and Big Medica. Of course, we undersand that the same companies which make the agricultural chemicals and additives are also the drug companies. They are also the industrialized agriculture companies.
Just as Big Pharma is working very hard to drive natural medicine out of existence since that is its primary competitor, so it and its sister industries, its sister Bigs, are working just as hard to take over all food production all over the world. After all, healthy people mean sickly profits for an industry that makes money only when you are sick, healthy profits mean sick people. And healthy food means slickly profits for the chemical, irradiation and GMO companies, all tightly tied to Big Pharma.
‘Whoever controls food controls the world’, Henry Kissinger told President Nixon in 1974 when he authored his then-secret National Security Memorandum 200. That same document stated what the World Health Organization would state at around the same time: that it was ‘necessary’ to hold depopulation as the primary goal of US foreign policy, “starting with the third world”. That is the reason that WHO gives for creating, and continuing to deploy
And that is precisely what Codex is: an extension of the US foregin policy of depopulation, with a huge dollop of greed and immoral deception thrown in for good measure. It is, in fact, nothing short of a globalist conspiracy, at the top levels, using food to contaminate our food supply and eliminate the “useless eaters” of the world, those who are consuming the non-renewable resources which the elite believe they own by some sort of diving right of Illuminati kings. I do not think you will look at Codex again, or the US involvement with it, the same way again.
Ah, you say, not in the US. Our food is clean and industries are held accountable for what they put in our food, do to our food, allow to happen to our food. That depopulation stuff is just for the third world, isn’t it?
Dream on. The very industries which FDA, EPA and USDA were created to curb, control and corral have become the owners, though intense corruption and vastly deep pockets, the dictators of the limp regulations which do not curb them, control them, nor protect anything but their interests, public be sickened and be dammed. Our food supply is horrifyingly degraded, minus accurate labeling.
How degraded? Take a look at the article following this article and realize that you are looking at Codex on the hoof, that, with a few minor differences, the contamination and adulteration described here, making you sick with illnesses of supposedly unknown origins like cancer, heart disease, MS, MD, arthritis, diabetes, auto immune disease, chemical sensitivity, birth defects, autism, infertility, psychiatric illnesses and on and on and on are also Codex on the hoof.
Wrap you mind around the reality that clean food is not easy for mega industries to produce, so it is not profitable. What is not profitable is not produced and, if someone else, for example, small farmers, produce it, they will be driven out of business.
With the help of the US Congress. The House of Representatives has passed legislation which, if passed by the Senate, will criminalize the production and sale of clean healthy foods. Senator Harkin’s bogus Food “Safety” Bill, S. 510, will give the entire food supply to Big Agribiz with no checks, balances or redress AND give vast amounts of power to the FDA, which Rep. Dr. Ron Paul says is already abusing its power to our detriment. We agree with Dr. Paul. Giving more power to what is arguably the most corrupt organization in the developed world is not a reasonable action.
Worse yet, our contaminated food requires an increased supply of nutrients but Senator John McCain has introduced another bogus Food “Safety” bill, S. 3002, which will destroy the legal basis for your access to the nutrients that over 90% of the US Population chooses to use to maintain or regain health.
The Natural Solutions Foundation knows that these bills are intended to destroy access to clean, unadulterated food, a prime requisite for health and freedom. We know that the high likelihood is that these two dangerous and anti-health, anti-freedom bills will be merged into a single omnibus piece of death-dealing legislation which will literally criminalize the production, sale or consumption of clean food and nutrients.
Please note that the contamination, irradiation, adulteration, chemicals permitted (including sprays of fluoride produced by Dow Chemical Company at 3300 ppm on your food to prevent it from getting moldy, for example), are just as much a problem as the meet additives listed below.
From where I sit, every single decision made by Codex, which really means made by the US Government on behalf of the multinational corporations, is a decision to degrade your health, curtail your freedom, mandate under nutrition and then use your suffering to ruthlessly control you and yours by eliminating all options for health choice and natural health options. Unless and until we take control of our health, our freedom and our food, things will just get worse.

Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find in meat & poultry. By the way, many of these chemicals do not need to be labeled on the products you purchase. Honestly, some of these things might be harmless. Even water can sound like a dangerous chemical if you refer to it as dihydrogen oxide. But the sheer length of this list as well as the fact that consumers are in the dark about most of them makes me very glad that I’m a vegetarian and that what little meat I’ve eaten in the past several years came directly from farmers I know.

Anticoagulants: Sodium tripolyphosphate
Antimicrobials: An aqueous solution of sodium diacetate (4%), lactic acid, (4%), pectin (2%), and acetic acid (0.5%); an aqueous solution of sodium octanoate or octanoic acid and either glycerin and/or propylene glycol and/or a Polysorbate surface active agent (quantity sufficient to achieve the technical effect of octanoic acid emulsification) adjusted to a final solution pH of 1.5 to 4.0 using sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or an acceptable GRAS [generally regarded as safe] acid;… (the list goes on for many pages and includes such gems as anhydrous ammonia and chlorine gas)
