Dr. Rima Reports: Valley of the Moon Eco Demonstration Community
It has been a very busy couple of weeks since we returned to the Valley of the Moon™ Eco Demonstration Project, the Natural Solutions Foundation’s Headquarters Finca (farm) in the Highlands of Panama, from our Health Freedom USA 2010 War Council. I was way too jammed up with things I had to attend to in order to write to you all and tell you what is going on, but I am carving time out of a very, very busy day to share with you what is happening because it is so interesting and important.
General Bert and I were in the States for 3 weeks (willing to travel there only because your Push Back has – so far – managed to avert both an overt closing-down of society into a police state and mandatory H1N1 (or other) vaccination for all seeking to enter or leave the US.
As some of you may know from my interview with Gov. Jessie Ventura on his Conspiracy Theory show, mandatory vaccination is, in our opinion, still a very real threat. And yes, to answer the questions of some, I do see very serious threat to our freedoms or I would not be devoting my life, without pay, 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, to this work – nor would the other Foundation Trustees! So it is not a ‘victim consciousness’ which drives us, but a freedom awareness and a sense of deep and abiding empowerment. Following that, we attended the Health Freedom USA 2010 Health Freedom War Council, Jan. 2,3, 2010, in New Jersey. We spent the next few days meeting with people who are interested in our Eco Demonstration Projects. One of the Joint Ventures which will function at the project has created a structure for Clinical Trials here in Panama to support the Wellness Industry in the US, EU and elsewhere — to help it defend itself from intended extinction (and I am not using these words lightly) by the US and international forces (represented in the US by FDA/EPA/FTC, the minions of the pharmaceutical industry, and internationally by such forces as Pharma-funded WHO, Codex Alimentarius, etc.). These trials will be conducted in Panama at the Valley of the Moon Eco Demonstration Project and will help the industry which provides us with the products and devices upon which we depend for natural health (e.g., supplements, herbs, energy devices, etc.) while contributing to the funding stream which will make the Project self-sustaining. The Wellness and Seminar Center, here at the Headquarters Finca, is nearing completion and will provide an invaluable resource for us and for the community: There is not a single full-service Advanced medical center in Panama and, as the pressures against this type of health care (as opposed to Big Pharma’s disastrous and rationed illness un-care), this resource will become even more precious.
The kitchen is currently being finished so that we will be able to serve totally Beyond Organic meals, snacks and, of course VALLEY OF THE MOON COFFEE, www.ValleyoftheMoonCoffee.org, to guests and everyone else who values this kind of food. The chef? Our marvelous Gail Coba, whom some of you already know. What that means, of course, is that we will need people to replace many of the functions that Gail currently fulfills as Executive Director of the Valley of the Moon. One of the really nice things that happened yesterday is that we found someone who may do just that. Maciel is coming on board this coming Monday and is a highly accomplished young woman from this area who is fully bilingual (7 years in the US). She comes equipped with a lively mind and high level administrative skills – and cares passionately about food.
Today, Patrica, our Administrator (who was hired to be my Personal Assistant but whose skills and connections are so immense that she has morphed into our Panamanian Liaison and Administrator, leaving me without a Personal Assistant – hint, hint, hint!!!!) and I are going on a kitchen tour of the local restaurants with great kitchens made by the guy we have selected to do our stainless steel work. As with all our efforts, we seek to meet the “Songhai Principles” of Doing What We Do With Passion, Perfection and Profitability”. Our Beyond Organic Cafe will provide a showcase for natural products and procedures.
Today the tiles for that kitchen have been bought. It will, of course, double as a teaching kitchen. Oh, yes, Patricia arranged for approval of our restaurant and kitchen plans by the Board of Health and the Fire Department before we went ahead with construction. We had no idea that such approval was necessary … see what I mean about Patricia? The willingness of people like her from the community to work with us on our Goal of “discovering, developing, demonstrating, documenting and disseminating natural solutions” gives us great hope for the future.
Yesterday was a red letter day for Valley of the Moon in a number of ways. We went over to the Town of Boquete to investigate another source of organic produce (we have stunningly clean raw milk, by the way, and will begin the production of Valley of the Moon yogurt this week with flavors made from organic fruit and organic sugar cane sugar, Raspadura, made in precisely the same natural way that maple syrup is manufactured: extraction of the juice and hand stirring while the excess liquid is evaporated. The result is a cake of sweet, nutrient rich concentrated cane juice. Our Raspadura is grown in clean soil without any chemical inputs whatsoever and extracted in hand driven presses, then boiled in stainless steel vats, strained with leaves to clarify the liquid and formed in wooden molds into the sweet cakes that we use for baking, cooking and, now, yogurt flavoring!
Where are we going to sell it? Many places. Yesterday, we placed our Valley of the Moon Coffee in Organica, the store selling, guess what? Organic products, in Boquete. Our yogurt will go there next week!

Is our coffee organic? You bet it is, but it is not yet certified. We are in the process of having it certified right this very minute, as a matter of fact! I cannot tell you exactly when we can add that word to our labels and web site, but it is in the works and we are thrilled. We respect the serious consideration given to the “organic” label in Panama and look forward to that addition to our label.
While we were in Boquete we were warmly greeted by some folks who are on our mailing list. They asked us to come to lunch with them and give them an update on the state of Codex. We did so and forged a great alliance with them. They want to be part of our food chain. What does that mean?
Well, neither a restaurant nor a community, nor a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture, program in which people make an investment at the beginning of the growing season, sharing the risk with the farmer and then get a weekly delivery of goods during the harvest) can survive on coffee and yogurt alone, no matter how wonderful they are.
So this afternoon, after the kitchen tour, our Executive Committee (Bert, Gail, Patricia and I) will meet to discuss our plans for actually beginning to grow our food to our standards on land that we already control. To provide food which is truly Beyond Organic for the restaurant and our Community Supported Agriculture programs we must grow our own while we teach farmers how to meet our exacting standards, reclaim their soil, etc.
If you are thinking about coming with organic growing experience (and maybe some heirloom seeds…) in your pocket, now would be a very good time to share that with us! You would be most warmly welcomed, and given responsibility and opportunity to grow and to teach.
Tomorrow we will get 50 organically raised chicks. We will be creating a humane, clean and practical chicken production facility, grazing both milk cattle and beef and getting our seeds into the ground. Our only problem is that we have too many options and need to winnow them down!
We met last week with a group of “Gringos” (Expat North Americans and Europeans) in Panama City who want to work with us on the CSA project because they believe in what we are doing and because they want the food! So that makes Volcan, Boquete and Panama City as potential outlets for our Friendly Food Certified products. If you have the skills necessary to help make this happen, y’all come!
We are welcoming a potential participant tonight and will go to see the land that we would like to purchase for our community tomorrow. On Friday morning, he will visit the local International Baccalaureate k-12 school’s principal to see if that placement is right for his children.
We have already met with him and his delightful wife when we were in NJ for the Webinar and they would be wonderful additions to our community. We really hope they love it here!
Too funny, by the way: while Ralph and I did our weekly 2 hour radio show, the Dr. Rima Reports: Your Health, Your Way, www.TheFreedomLink.org, General Bert took our visitor to the hotel and had dinner with him. I learned when General Bert was on his way home that two men came up to him, introduced themselves and announced that they were looking for me because they had come to Panama to see the land and talk with us about becoming part of the Valley of the Moon Eco Demonstration Project. They are coming with us tomorrow to see the land! [We do prefer to hear from people in advance if they want to visit the VotM facilities.]
What truly impresses us are the level of natural-process skills the people interested in participating in the Project possess. We are truly honored that the Health Freedom community is responding so strongly to our effort to preserve and teach the natural skills and methods we all value.
There are several other people whom we met at the War Council event who we will be welcoming soon. Not only that, a participant, his wife and 3 pets are due next week in what we all believe is a permanent move here. He is an IT guy, she is a Certified Raw Chef!!!!!!! WOW! We look forward to their help developing the infrastructure for the Seminar (and Webinar) program we will be sponsoring from the Headquarters. We have a number of world-class experts in all areas of health and food ready to provide a superb educational program.
And, indeed, one of our brilliant friends: scholar, inventor, innovative nutritional provider and War Council presenter and his talented wife, are also coming into the project as full participants – and more, which we cannot talk about yet.
Following our meetings in NJ with potential Clinical Trial clients, we were about to come back to Panama immediately but, because of an opportunity to further the project in some remarkable ways, we changed our plans and went to Denver for a week.
There we met with, spent time with, and got a commitment from a remarkable man who has the potential to bring about large impact soil reclamation impacts with reduced effort.
He agreed to come to Panama to do a field test: we will select 5 farms at various altitudes which are highly contaminated with agricultural chemicals and do laboratory analysis on the quality of the soil, including the level of chemical contamination, the bacteria and other characteristics of the soil.
Following that, we will apply the technology he brings to the project to 1/2 of each of the 5 farms and re-analyze the soil. We will also document the crop growth characteristics on the treated and the untreated halves.
If the technologies prove useful, then we will offer to apply them to the entire country. This is potentially an experiment of global significance. But before we go forward with it on a large scale, we need, of course, to document the effects. I don’t know about you, but being part 0f this level of creative development and exploration is enormously gratifying and satisfying to the Trustees of the Natural Solutions Foundation and everyone else who is involved in what we are doing.
Since dairy is very important here, we will also apply the technologies to 5 cows whose milk output and characteristics are already well document and use another 5 cows as controls. Their output, milk solids, bacterial count and other output characteristics will be carefully documented following this application.
You can assume, and you would be totally correct, that this technology is entirely without negative consequences for humans, animals and the environment. Precisely like the medicine I practice, if it can harm, we would not do it. If it can help, we will. That is why, under the Precautionary Principle, we cannot support the release of GMO “foods” onto the market.

WAR ON US(A) IS NOT A METAPHOR!
When the Natural Solutions Foundation calls a spade a spade and identifies what is taking place on a global basis as a war against the people we are not speaking lightly. We mean it literally.
Arial Spraying, GMOs and beyond, vaccines…. Horrifyingly, the list goes on and on.
Consider: even though the bogus Swine Flu Level 6 Pandemic fizzled, the genocialists STILL want you to take your Swine Flu shots. Why?

Consider the H1N1 vaccine, which is causing a rising tide of spontaneous abortions in perfectly healthy pregnancies.
Consider: despite the fact that mercury is a known neurotoxin, 800,000 doses of mercury free Sanofi Pasteur vaccines intended for very young children have been withdrawn for sub optimal potency. Another 4.7 million doses of Medimmune’s (Astra Zenica) Nasal Spray vaccine have been withdrawn for the same reason.
Is the vaccine cabal getting ready to announce that squalene, the incredibly dangerous adjuvant which, in large doses, causes not only profound and lethal auto immune disease, but sterility when injected is “needed” to “save” the potency which has “mysteriously” dropped below previous levels? Remember that the US government inexplicably purchased over 1/2 billion dollars worth of this unapproved and very, very dangerous injectable adjuvant.
(By the way, it is not clear if the women who miscarry will ever be able to carry a pregnancy again.)
No one, we are told, knows why the potency dropped after manufacture. Of course, we are not told that there is not a shred of evidence that high OR low potency vaccines have any protective impact. That they are dangerous and do not prevent infection is quite clear.
There is, however, a huge body of knowledge which says that the mercury-rich doses that the babies will receive (if their parents are naive enough to trust the government!) will damage them, possibly forever.
And we know enough to understand that a substance which is a known toxin for fetuses, often causing fetal death (which may be the reason that so many pregnant women are loosing their babies after being vaccinated) is also a toxin for the babies who will be unlucky enough to receive the replacement 800,000 doses WITH mercury and the kids who will receive the 4.7 million replacement doses for the “sub potency” H1N1 vaccines.
Consider: H1N1 Vaccine, has NEVER been tested for safety…
Consider: There is zero evidence that the immune titer (response) associated with H1N1 vaccine (or any vaccine, for that matter) actually provides any protection against the disease). Sub optimal or not, the stuff is, at best, useless, and, at worst life threatening…
Consider: WHO, a private corporation like the FED, receives more than 2/3 of its funding from Big Pharma, whose products it creates global markets for and whose interests it serves. WHO created this organism, this pandemic and this vaccine danger.
The same organization has been researching and USING sterilization vaccines against women since 1974 all over the world. Why not in the US now?

Welcome to 2010, the year we either win our freedom or lose it for at least the next millennium.
Think that’s an exaggeration? We don’t.
The War on the People was declared long ago in the halls of Globalist power brokers, but it has, until recently, been one of the best, the most well-kept secrets on the globe.
One of the outstanding successes of the Natural Solutions Foundation (and we are proud to say that it is not our only success, http://drrimatruthreports.com/?page_id=195!) is that we have been able to alert a planet-wide community, including you, to the fact that each of the assaults on our health and our freedom is not an isolated event.
Each is a battle well financed and well planned to make it harder and harder for each of us to do what we want to do: live in health and peace, watching our lives and families prosper based on our personal and community needs and wishes.

Pardon me? Excuse me? Third wave? What “third wave”? What “second wave”? Other than media hype and despicable non-science, what “first wave”?
Instead, the Globalist plan, their Agenda is just the opposite:
– Contaminate our food [e.g., Codex, GMOs, pesticides, toxic waste as fertilizer, etc]
– Control our health choices (e.g., Government control of our resources, choices, pharmaceutical medicine only, eliminate natural medicine and health choices, including high potency supplements)
– Control our information (e.g., mainstream media “poison press” re: nutrition, eliminate information through FDA, FTC censorship of claims so that, for example, “Nano Silver, www.Nutronix.com/naturalsolutions, can kill the pandemic organisms” becomes an illegal statement, “Cancer is a preventable disease of under nutrition and is best cured through low cost, non toxic strategies like intensive nutrition” becomes an illegal statement, etc.)
– Discredit opposition concepts (e.g., there is a global conspiracy to depopulate the planet, supported by incontrovertible proof, global warming is a sham concept supported by flawed science for political purposes) as “conspiracy theory” through the power of the Main Stream Media, a Weapon of Mass Deception)
Instead of a globalist agenda for depopulation and slavery (which is what any fair-minded person must call the state of affairs when someone else makes your health, food and illness-care decisions for you and your children in spite of your wishes), the Natural Solutions Foundation joins you in supporting a Planetary Agenda, one where
– Each of us has the choice to seek, obtain and maintain health in the ways that make the most sense to us
– No one has the right to compel us to accept vaccination, medication or contamination which is unacceptable to us
– We are free to access information without restriction
– Clean, unadulterated food is available to us as we choose
– No medication or treatment (including any vaccine) may be forced upon us for any reason
– Governmental and non-governmental policies which accept and support depopulation must be canceled and those responsible for them must be removed from positions of authority
National and international agencies dealing with issues which touch on food, health and security must be made answerable only to people and the influence of corporations must be eliminated through restoring full legal liability to corporations and removing corporate “personhood” behind which corporations hide their culpability. No corporate shield for willfull misconduct!
Too much to expect for 1 year? Perhaps. But since the thrust to solidify Globalist policies and impact is moving so rapidly, the Trustees of the Natural Solutions Foundation believe that 2010 will be the year in which we, those with a Planetary Agenda for Freedom, either gain the high ground or loose it to those with a GLOBALIST Agenda for depopulation and slavery.
We will not accept the World Health Organization, a private corporation like the Federal Reserve Board, taking world control of world governance via a make-believe pandemic of their own creation.
We will not accept the US Government taking control of the US food supply to turn it into a Weapon of Mass Destruction while the Illness Care Industry preys upon our induced weakness and disease with dangerous and ineffective vaccines, drugs and procedures while ending the right of each of us to grow or access clean food.
We will not accept the US Government rationing our health and our disease for its own purposes.
We will not accept the nationalization of our health care information for purposes we cannot even guess at accurately
We will not accept the status of health slaves, food slaves or information slaves.

The American Dietetic Association (ADA) says,
“A balanced diet is best way to safeguard health and to prevent disease rather than relying on nutrition supplementation”. http://www.nutraingredients-usa.com/content/view/print/269921
The ADA also says that they, and they alone, should be the only people legally permitted to tell anyone anything at all about nutrition. Ever. No Doctors, Nurses, Nutritionists, Biochemists, only Dietitians. You know, the people who are responsible for the ghastly diets of cheap non-foods in nursing homes, hospitals and other places where if you are sick, the food makes you sicker and if you are not sick, you soon will be if you hang around there long enough.
Here is my question to the ADA: “How, pray tell, are we to have a balanced diet when our food is being increasingly replaced by non-food substitutes filled with chemicals, flavors that never saw a real food item and deadly, damaged oils? Just how does that happen? And how does it happen when our food is grown in soil so demineralized that there is nothing for the plant to make nourishment out of for you? When the foods that we are offered by the industrialized food supply contains non-food substitutes like the 6 mentioned in the following article? Where is the balanced diet supposed to come from when 90% of our food has been manufactured from genetically modified sources, meat is being grown in cloning tanks and the amount of poison in food production is so great that beekeepers in Europe are actually calling, at their own economic peril, for bee products to be banned from human consumption because they are now so toxic that they cannot be safely eaten?
The articles below are noteworthy because they are a taste of things to come, literally, if the Food Fascism bill, S. 510, now before the Senate, which will drive small, organic and clean farming operations out of business nationwide, is allowed to pass. It will not only mean that the corrupt, dysfunctional and dangerous FDA will be given far more authority to abuse than it has now [including the power to declare marshal law (!)] but also that the entire food supply will be industrialized. What does that mean? It means that whatever is cheapest will be marketed and sold to you as if it were food. And it means real food, such as safe raw milk, will be demonized and outlawed, as the second article below suggests is happening right now!
The World Health Organization and Food and Agricultural Organization’s Joint Special Report, Diet, Nutrition and the Prevention of Chronic Disease, www.who.int/dietphysicalactivity/publications/trs916/en/ makes it clear that under nutrition (including high calorie under nutrition, a form of slow starvation) is the primary cause of cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. These 5 diseases are the primary causes of morbidity and mortality in the US and the rest of the developing world. They are also the principle money makers for the Illness Care Industry, at the head of which, of course, you will not be surprised to find Big Pharma.
Oh, yes, the Pharmaceutical companies are also chemical companies. They make the dangerous chemicals which are permitted in our food by Codex, the US EPA and their global counterparts. AND, of course, they make the drugs which the sell when your under nutrition and your toxic state damage your immune system so badly that there is nothing left with which to fight off these chronic, disabling and, frequently, ultimately lethal, diseases.
So the passage of S. 510 means, ultimately, non-food substitutes like the ones below in favor of food, real food. You are already eating GMO corn which has been turned into flavors, starches, amino acids and a host of other “food” products. You are already eating fats which have been treated in such a way that they become toxic since hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats are both immune suppressive and neurotoxic.
You are already eating food which is being irradiated. And damaged at every processing step. Isn’t it time that We, the People, required that our government define food as a nutritive substance whose immediate last identity was recognizable food? We think it is.

The 6 Weirdest, Scariest Processed Foods

Once upon a time, some brave scientists had a noble dream of ridding our food of the plague of nutrients.
Today, at the start of the 21st century, the miracle of food processing has brought that dream closer to reality than ever before. From vitamin-free “blueberry bits” to spray-can cheese to avocado-free guacamole, food scientists have worked tirelessly to bring us new and exciting foods that contain as little nutrition as possible. Even apparently “healthy” foods such as soups have been ingeniously overloaded with so much salt you feel as if you’re eating French fries.
In this article, we’ll provide a handy guide to six uniquely unnatural processed foods that will hopefully serve as a blueprint for humanity’s eventual triumph over the tyrannical fist of Mother Nature.
1. Spray-Can ‘Easy Cheese’
Dipping a butter knife into a tub of cheese spread and putting it on a cracker takes a lot of time and effort. Thankfully for all of us, the wizards at Kraft have developed a product that ensures we’ll never again run the risk of hurting our wrists trying to spread processed cheese. Kraft’s Easy Cheese cans combine the soulless tastelessness of its cheese products with the convenience and simplicity of whipped cream cans.
The most interesting aspect of Easy Cheese is its remarkable consistency. Normally, cheese comes in a solid state when kept at room temperature and only becomes liquid when melted at high temperatures. Easy Cheese, on the other hand, has a Goldilocks-like “not too solid, not too viscous” quality that makes it easy to spread on food without having it drip on your clothing.
According to an exposé in Wired magazine, Easy Cheese achieves this amazing texture by containing lots of unhealthy crap, such as the stain-removing chemical trisodium phosphate and a healthy dose of canola oil that keeps the cheese from solidifying. Oh, and they also load Easy Cheese with about twice the amount of salt you’d normally find in natural cheddar cheese.
But the best ingredient in Easy Cheese is calcium phosphate, which is used as a calcium supplement. “But wait,” you say. “Why does a cheese product need calcium added artificially?” Well, as Wired speculates, the sodium phosphate could actually negate the calcium in the natural cheese. Thus, Kraft had to put in an additive that would make up for the calcium that’s taken away through food processing. Genius!
2. Oreo Cookie Death Filling
It’s rare to encounter a food that makes you say, “If only this were as healthy as frosting!” And yet, the filling in Oreo cookies manages to accomplish just that.
You see, typical frosting is made mostly from butter, milk, sugar and vanilla extract. No one will ever accuse it of being good for you, but at least you’re eating fairly natural fats. Oreo stuffing, on the other hand, is basically sugar-flavored Crisco. Seriously, that’s what you’re consuming when you eat an Oreo.
Oreos’ death filling is so bad it even inspired an ill-fated lawsuit in California a few years back that tried to stop the sale of Oreos to children. While the suit was eventually dropped, it did introduce trans fats to the public consciousness and helped spearhead the campaign to make food companies indicate on their labels whether their products contained any trans fats, so it wasn’t a total waste.
That said, I think the best way to stop people from eating Oreos wouldn’t be to ban them outright but to force Kraft to rebrand them to reflect their actual ingredients. So let’s say you mandate that Kraft label its cookies “Criscoroes” and have the package depict a kid gorging himself in a tub of vegetable shortening. Yum!
3. Condensed Soups
Ah, soup. It’s the food mom used to feed us when we were sick. Every child has fond memories of being nursed back to health by sipping at the warm, nutritious broth of chicken noodle soup. Of course, mom probably didn’t realize at the time that she was setting you up for a future of high blood pressure and kidney failure. Because if she fed you condensed soup from a can, she was loading your young body up with insanely high amounts of sodium.
How insanely high, you ask? Well, consider that a mere half-cup of Campbell’s Vegetable Soup contains a heart-stopping 890 mg of sodium, or roughly 37 percent of your daily recommended sodium intake. But wait, there’s more! The typical Campbell’s soup can contains one-and-a-half cups of soup, meaning that one can of soup contains more than 90 percent of your daily recommended sodium intake.
To be fair to Campbell’s, it does have a “Healthy Request” brand of soup that contains roughly half the salt of Campbell’s other soups. Still, one of soup’s supposed key virtues is that it isn’t a cheeseburger. In other words, when you buy a bowl of soup you shouldn’t have to “request” a healthy version of it.
4. Spam
Spam was really a major miracle of food science, as it solved a mystery that humanity had been trying for centuries to figure out: namely, how to make meat-flavored Jell-O. Developed in the 1930s, Spam is derived primarily from pork shoulder meat (seriously) and combined with water, sugar, sodium nitrate (of course) and copious amounts of salt. The result is a meat-like goo that derives 80 percent of its calories from fat and that delivers a whopping 790 mg of sodium per two-ounce serving.
Spam first hit the big-time during World War II when its highly preserved state made it the ideal food to feed to our protein-needy soldiers fighting over in Europe. Now there’s a fine tribute to our fighting boys! Thanks for risking your butts against the Nazis, fellas, now here’s a mound of pork slime! When you think about it, it’s remarkable that more of our troops didn’t defect to the German army, which assuredly would have offered them generous helpings of bratwurst, knockwurst and schweineschnitzel in exchange for changing sides. The fact that Americans bravely suffered through Spam prior to fighting the Battle of the Bulge adds yet another heroic chapter to the Greatest Generation’s legacy.
5. Artificially Flavored Blueberry Bits
Frozen waffles are fairly non-nutritious. Indeed, the only real way to get any sort of vitamins in your waffles each morning is to buy blueberry waffles that contain….
But, hang on! It turns out those aren’t blueberries at all! They’re more like…well, just what are they? An apt description would be “purple globs of sugary goo,” but they’re actually called “artificially flavored blueberry bits.” Their ingredients include sugar, dextrose, soybean oil, soy protein, salt, citric acid, cellulose gum, artificial flavor, malic acid, Red 40 Lake, Blue 2 Lake and…that’s it. Notice anything missing? Oh yeah: blueberries!
For a long time, companies such as Aunt Jemima parent Pinnacle Foods were able to get away with implying that these little unfruity lumps were actual blueberries, as the box for Aunt Jemima’s blueberry waffles had pictures of actual blueberries strewn across it. But the threat of a lawsuit from Center for Science in the Public Interest made Pinnacle decide to tell people that their waffles didn’t contain any actual blueberries.
What makes the development of fake blueberries so exciting is the number of possibilities it opens up for other fake fruits. Picture artificial strawberry strips, made mostly of bacon and high-fructose corn syrup. Or perhaps artificial melon mounds made of solidified vegetable oil and dextrose monohydrate. Or the coup de grace, artificial artificial blueberry bits, made with NutraSweet and artificial soy protein. Not one natural ingredient, baby!
Kraft’s Avocado-Free Guacamole
This right here may be the pinnacle of processed food magic. Kraft has managed to make a food product without an actual main ingredient, akin to tomato-free tomato sauce or potato-free baked potato. Yes, there are no avocados in Kraft’s guacamole. Then what is it made of, you ask? How about some modified food starch, coconut and soybean oils, corn syrup, food coloring…in other words, you’re eating green-colored oil.
As with a lot of phony processed foods, the avocado-free guacamole compelled somebody to sue the product’s manufacturer for false advertising. In this case, California resident Brenda Lifsey got upset because she thought Kraft’s guacamole “didn’t taste avocadoey.” She then looked at the ingredients, and lo and behold, “there was almost no avocado in it.”
Kraft’s response to Lifsey’s lawsuit was a masterwork of poor corporate spin, as a company spokesperson told the Los Angeles Times, “We think customers understand that it isn’t made from avocado.” Well actually, no. Customers tend to buy guacamole with the understanding that it will be made from, oh, I don’t know, avocados. This is akin to a Viagra spokesperson saying, “We think customers understand that our pills won’t really give them erections.”
For the record, Kraft is no longer selling congealed green oil as “guacamole” but rather as “guacamole-flavored dip.” It’s an improvement, I suppose, though I think somebody should file a suit against Kraft that prevents the company from ever again describing its products as “foods.”*

Raw Milk – Regulated Out of Existence
Do you seek out natural, wholesome foods, free of GMO ingredients, etc.? Do you treasure raw milk for its wonderful, healthful qualities as an ingredient in your favorite holiday treats? It is becoming increasingly difficult to find good food and drink… Why? Because of the policies of the state and Federal governments.
It’s happening in South Dakota, Missouri, California, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Wisconsin, for sure, where there have been recent efforts to shut down dairy and/or raw milk sales. That’s, of course, in addition to fully destroying dairy farming inside the corporate system, and now the dairy giants pushing to get rid of independent dairy farmers by putting regulations in S 510 to demand pasteurization of raw milk.
We need to keep track of all these assaults (I am sure there are more) and lay out the whole picture so aware, conscious eaters can Push Back and resist the industrialization of our food supply!
Here is a most egregious example of the assault on Food Freedom.
South Dakota Department of Agriculture proposed rules for raw milk dairy farmers is the prelude to S 510 and reveals how it will work. Raise the food safety standard beyond what anyone could afford, apply onerous rules that impinge even on customers, and drive farmers off their land and out of farming.

The proposed South Dakota Department of Agriculture rules are barriers-to-entry regulations that will create a defacto ban on the sale of raw milk. They would take away rights given by the legislature by imposing expensive requirements that those dairies wanting to sell raw milk would not be able to afford. The standards required for a permit would include a mechanical bottling machine (handcapping would be prohibited) and a separate facility for bottling; for Grade A licensed dairies a building separate from the milk parlor would be required for bottling. One licensed Grade A dairy farmer currently selling raw milk estimated that if the proposed rules became law, he would have to spend a minimum of $76,000 to be in compliance after figuring the cost of a separate building for bottling, a storage tank for the bottling facility, pumps to move the milk from the parlor to the bottling facility, a mechanical bottling machine and the installation costs.
In addition to equipment and construction requirements, raw milk producers would have to test twice yearly for bovine tuberculosis (TB) and brucellosis; no other State requires testing more than once a year, and the standard for coliform South Dakota has set has proven difficult for California raw milk licensed dairies to meet. Raw milk producers would also be required to maintain customer lists to SDDA upon request. Moreover, “[t]he list must be continually updated and include the data for at least 60 days. This customer list shall include customer names, addresses, phone numbers and quantities of raw milk sold for human consumption.”
The purpose of the proposed rule is not to ensure that safe raw milk is sold; it is an attempt to ensure that no raw milk is sold legally. The proposed rules need to be stopped.
The corporations and ag departments under the USDA urged dairy farmers to expand, got them into debt, and then dropped the prices paid to them (with no protection), until those people are destroyed. They have sold herds and many have committed suicide. Now the same forces are going after the raw milk dairy farmers, the people who stayed small, and did well by just doing business with local people who wanted their product. Yet the corporations and the agencies they control, are doing all they can to get rid of them, too.
Is this how to bring back the US economy?
What the Department of Agriculture in South Dakota is doing is unjust, destroys good jobs during a terrible time in our economy, and threatens local food supplies for communities already hurting. It is the last thing any state should be doing to its own food industry and its citizens.
As to the safety of raw milk, Yale has shown the friendly bacteria found in raw milk (but not in pasteurized milk ) is protective against type 1 diabetes and raw milk used to used by the Mayo clinic to treat diseases (without having passed a single “food safety” standard that South Dakota is promoting).. P. Hall comments:
Raw milk kills E. coli & Listeria when it is produced from cattle grazing on pasture and living in healthy conditions as opposed to those grain fed and living in inhumane stocks. If animal control laws for inhumane treatment were applied to the dairy industry most milk producers would go to jail. It is the inhumane treatment and filthy conditions that allow pathogens to exist. Just common sense. Otherwise how could mankind have subsisted for all eternity on raw milk? And we have.

Raw milk dairy farmers should be a cause celebre in this country (all local farmers should be) – the people who know how to survive in hard times and can provide food to their neighbors. They are the last people who should be lost.
During a lousy economy, who gets rid of the only functioning part of the dairy industry and of jobs, especially jobs that provide food to people who want it? What is really driving this? The WTO interests appear to be doing to food what the international bankers did to our economy, destroying it here to take global control of it. They are using hygiene in the same false way in Europe and getting rid of farmers intentionally. They want the land. They want CAFOs. They want to be rid of farmers.
The WTO appears to be planning to outsource dairy production to India and China (shipping back milk powder that is then reconstituted) so they can do whatever they want with prices here since we would be solely dependent on foreign milk (and eventually other food). Corporate milk would be even more a “processed” food and thus there would be even more corporate middlemen involved as well as more and more contamination.
Food safety?
South Dakota needs to hear that the whole country stands with them in absolutely protecting their local farmers from such destructive and corrupt regulations. The Department of Agriculture needs to hear that the country sees that their regulations (and S 510) serve only the World Trade Organization, not are not in the interest of people, local communities, states, food security, … and especially NOT food safety.

Why is reclaiming the production of food important to you, today? If you live in the US, about 90% of the food you eat either IS GMO or contains GMO ingredients. GMO foods are now known to cause cancer, autoimmune diseases, infertility, birth defects, loss of CD-4 cells to the point that the criteria for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (yes, that’s right: HIV/AIDS) are met, and a host of serious, permanent diseases and mutations. These altered foods contain material which crosses the placental and blood brain barriers to cause permanent genetic changes, as they do in the bacteria of the GI tract and in every cell in the body.
“But I eat only certified organic food!” you may say. Well and good IF you are growing your own organic food, protected from both pesticide and genetic drift. Otherwise, the US allows 10% or more GMO contamination of organic food without any labeling. Indeed, labeling of GMO foods is actually prohibited in the US because, as Dr. Barbara Schneeman announced at a Codex Meeting in Norway on the topic, since the FDA administratively determined that genetically modified foods are “substantially equivalent” to non modified foods [in the absence of a single shred of scientific support for this concept – if they were substantially identical, they would not be patentable – REL] and since consumers would reject these genetically modified foods if they knew that they WERE genetically modified, the FDA is preventing them from making an error in rejecting them. So, instead, the FDA and USDA are carrying out the world’s largest experiment on every eater on the planet. It is an experiment carried out, of course, without any informed consent. On you. On your children. On the children that you, or others, will never have because of the sterility impact of these foods.
But that is not all, of course. Corporate agriculture pumps poisons (that is a literal description, of course, not a figurative one) into the bodies of the workers, the environment and the bodies of the consumers. If the land becomes too toxic, or the water no longer supports growth and life, the corporation moves on, like a parasite which has sucked the life out of its host and then, when the host can no longer support it, drops off and moves on to another host.
Food and freedom are intimately intertwined. This theme has been with us for a very long time. Look at the myths of the bible: remember that when Essau was hungry, he sold his birthright to Jacob. When Joseph and his brothers were hungry, they traded their freedom for the fleshpots of Egypt.
Industrial Agriculture can be, if its owners wish it, the newest form of scorched earth policy: stave those whom you do not wish to survive.

The New Farm Owners: Corporate Investors Lead the Rush for Control over Overseas Farmland

With all the talk about “food security,” and distorted media statements like “South Korea leases half of Madagascar’s land,”1 it may not be evident to a lot of people that the lead actors in today’s global land grab for overseas food production are not countries or governments but corporations. So much attention has been focused on the involvement of states, like Saudi Arabia, China or South Korea. But the reality is that while governments are facilitating the deals, private companies are the ones getting control of the land. And their interests are simply not the same as those of governments.

Take one example. In August 2009, the government of Mauritius, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, got a long-term lease for 20,000 ha of good farmland in Mozambique to produce rice for the Mauritian market. This is outsourced food production, no question. But it is not the government of Mauritius, on behalf of the Mauritian people, that is going to farm that land and ship the rice back home. Instead, the Mauritian Minister of Agro Industry immediately sub-leased the land to two corporations, one from Singapore (which is anxious to develop the market for its proprietary hybrid rice seeds in Africa) and one from Swaziland (which specialises in cattle production, but is also involved in biofuels in southern Africa).
This is typical. And it means that we should not be blinded by the involvement of states. Because at the end of the day, what the corporations want will be decisive. And they have a war chest of legal, financial and political tools to assist them.

Moreover, there’s a tendency to assume that private-sector involvement in the global land grab amounts to traditional agribusiness or plantation companies, like Unilever or Dole, simply expanding the contract farming model of yesterday. In fact, the high-power finance industry, with little to no experience in farming, has emerged as a crucial corporate player. So much so that the very phrase “investing in agriculture”, today’s mantra of development bureaucrats, should not be understood as automatically meaning public funds. It is more and more becoming the business of … big business.
The role of finance capital
GRAIN has tried to look more closely at who the private sector investors currently taking over farmlands around the world for offshore food production really are. From what we have gathered, the role of finance capital — investment funds and companies — is truly significant. We have therefore constructed a table to share this picture. The table outlines over 120 investment structures, most of them newly created, which are busy acquiring farmland overseas in the aftermath of the financial crisis.3 Their engagement, whether materialised or targeted, rises into the tens of billions of dollars. The table is not exhaustive, however. It provides only a sample of the kinds of firms or instruments involved, and the levels of investment they are aiming for.
Private investors are not turning to agriculture to solve world hunger or eliminate rural poverty. They want profit, pure and simple. And the world has changed in ways that now make it possible to make big money from farmland. From the investors’ perspective, global food needs are guaranteed to grow, keeping food prices up and providing a solid basis for returns on investment for those who control the necessary resource base. And that resource base, particularly land and water, is under stress as never before. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, so-called alternative investments, such as infrastructure or farmland, are all the rage. Farmland itself is touted as providing a hedge against inflation. And because its value doesn’t go up and down in sync with other assets like gold or currencies, it allows investors to successfully diversify their portfolios.
“We are not farmers. We are a large company that uses state-of-the-art technology to produce high-quality soybean. The same way you have shoemakers and computer manufacturers, we produce agricultural commodities.” Laurence Beltrão Gomes of SLC Agrícola, the largest farm company in Brazil.
But it’s not just about land, it’s about production. Investors are convinced that they can go into Africa, Asia, Latin America and the former Soviet bloc to consolidate holdings, inject a mix of technology, capital and management skills, lay down the infrastructures and transform below-potential farms into large-scale agribusiness operations. In many cases, the goal is to generate revenue streams both from the harvests and from the land itself, whose value they expect to go up. It is a totally corporate version of the Green Revolution, and their ambitions are big. “My boss wants to create the first Exxon Mobil of the farming sector,” said Joseph Carvin of Altima Partners’ One World Agriculture Fund to a gathering of global farmland investors in New York in June 2009. No wonder, then, that governments, the World Bank and the UN want to be associated with this. But it is not their show.
From rich to richer

Eventually, of course, food prices will get high enough that the market probably will be flooded with supply through development of new land or technology or both, and the bull market will end. But that’s a long ways away yet.”

Today’s emerging new farm owners are private equity fund managers, specialised farmland fund operators, hedge funds, pension funds, big banks and the like. The pace and extent of their appetite is remarkable – but unsurprising, given the scramble to recover from the financial crisis.
Consolidated data are lacking, but we can see that billions of dollars are going into farmland acquisitions for a growing number of “get rich quick” schemes. And some of those dollars are hard-earned retirement savings of teachers, civil servants and factory workers from countries such as the US or the UK. This means that a lot of ordinary citizens have a financial stake in this trend, too, whether they are aware of it or not.
It also means that a new, powerful lobby of corporate interests is coming together, which wants favourable conditions to facilitate and protect their farmland investments. They want to tear down burdensome land laws that prevent foreign ownership, remove host-country restrictions on food exports and get around any regulations on genetically modified organisms. For this, we can be sure that they will be working with their home governments, and various development banks, to push their agendas around the globe through free trade agreements, bilateral investment treaties and donor conditionalities.

Their experience of high-yielding variety crops, and the chemical-intensive technologies heralded by the Green Revolution, led them to the conclusion that they were better off converting to diverse, organic farming, with the support of farmer-scientist or member organizations such as MASIPAG and PDG Inc.”

Indeed, the global land grab is happening within the larger context of governments, both in the North and the South, anxiously supporting the expansion of their own transnational food and agribusiness corporations as the primary answer to the food crisis. The deals and programmes being promoted today all point to a restructuring and expansion of the industrial food system, based on capital-intensive large-scale monocultures for export markets. While that may sound “old hat”, several things are new and different. For one, the infrastructure needs for this model will be dealt with. (The Green Revolution never did that.) New forms of financing, as our table makes plain, are also at the base of it. Thirdly, the growing protagonism of corporations and tycoons from the South is also becoming more important. US and European transnationals like Cargill, Tyson, Danone and Nestlé, which once ruled the roost, are now being flanked by emerging conglomerates such as COFCO, Olam, Savola, Almarai and JBS.4 A recent report from the UN Conference on Trade and Development pointed out that a solid 40% of all mergers and acquisitions in the field of agricultural production last year were South-South.5 To put it bluntly, tomorrow’s food industry in Africa will be largely driven by Brazilian, ethnic Chinese and Arab Gulf capital.
Exporting food insecurity
Given the heavy role of the private sector in today’s land grabs, it is clear that these firms are not interested in the kind of agriculture that will bring us food sovereignty. And with hunger rising faster than population growth, it will not likely do much for food security, either.
One farmers’ leader from Synérgie Paysanne in Benin sees these land grabs as fundamentally “exporting food insecurity”. For they are about answering some people’s needs – for maize or money – by taking food production resources away from others. He is right, of course. In most cases, these investors are themselves not very experienced in running farms. And they are bound, as the Coordinator of MASIPAG in the Philippines sees it, to come in, deplete the soils of biological life and nutrients through intensive farming, pull out after a number of years and leave the local communities with “a desert”.

The talk about channeling this sudden surge of dollars and dirhams into an agenda for resolving the global food crisis could be seen as quirky if it were not downright dangerous. From the United Nations headquarters in New York to the corridors of European capitals, everyone is talking about making these deals “win-win”. All we need to do, the thinking goes, is agree on a few parameters to moralise and discipline these land grab deals, so that they actually serve local communities, without scaring investors off. The World Bank even wants to create a global certification scheme and audit bureau for what could become “sustainable land grabbing”, along the lines of what’s been tried with oil palm, forestry or other extractive industries.
Before jumping on the bandwagon of “win-win”, it would be wise to ask “With whom? Who are the investors? What are their interests?” It is hard to believe that, with so much money on the line, with so much accumulated social experience in dealing with mass land concessions and conversions in the past, whether from mining or plantations, and given the central role of the finance and agribusiness industries here, these investors would suddenly play fair. Just as hard to believe is that governments or international agencies would suddenly be able to hold them to account.

Making these investments work is simply not the right starting point.
Supporting small farmers efforts for real food sovereignty is. Those are two highly polarised agendas and it would be mistaken to pass off one for the other. It is crucial to look more closely at who the investors are and what they really want. But it is even more important to put the search for solutions to the food crisis on its proper footing.
