Lynn McTaggert publishes the interesting UK-based “What Doctors Don’t Tell You” newsletter and materials. We have never met but I read her material and hope that she reads ours.
Recently I read a heartfelt plea by Ms. McTaggert crying out for someone, anyone, to understand that health freedom and the restrictions of nutrients and natural health options (to which, of course, I would add both food and the right to refuse or use any treatment you wish), when under attack, IS their problem.
In 2002, when Ms. McTaggert saw what was going to happen to natural health options in the EU, she convened a meeting to which few came and fewer paid close and productive attention.
Her experience was so like mine that I felt compelled to answer her experience in the UK with ours here in the US. My response to Lynn McTaggert’s WDDK article “Not My Problem”,
I am the Medical Director of the Natural Solutions Foundation, www.HealthFreedomUSA.org and www.GlobalHealthFreedom.org.
I have practiced natural, that means drug free, psychiatry and medicine since I was graduated from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1970.
It was clear to me for a couple of decades that these assaults on our health freedom, and the right to access clean food, natural health strategies and pharmaceutical alternatives was under an increasing crescendo of attack.
It was clear to me by 2004 that our side was doing nothing much productive to counter effectively what the Uber Cartel, led by Big Pharma, were up to: globalized health and freedom suppression and genocide through illness based on dangerous drugs, pollution and devitalized foods that do not sustain health, let alone life.
Realizing that there was no road back once these changes were institutionalized, my husband, Maj. General Albert N. Stubblebine III (US Army, Ret.) closed our practice of drug free medicine, sold our house and created the Natural Solutions Foundation.
Why didn’t we just join forces with other health freedom organizations? Well, we tried. The first thing we did was call a well known health freedom advocate and offer our help and support. financial and otherwise. His response? “I do not like you because I do not know you, I do not trust psychiatrists and there is nothing you can do for health freedom. Just send money and leave me alone.” That is a direct quote.
We were so appalled that an apparent leader of this “movement” would be so short sighted and self absorbed, with no better prospects on the horizon, that we were catapulted into our decision to take this battle on since no one particularly effective or strategy-minded was on the scene.
Next, we met with other people in the “movement” and suggested in early January, 2005, a meeting of all the groups involved in this battle, much as Lynn did. That meeting took 6 weeks to organize. Most of the invitees did not come. Those who did were most occupied with slashing at each other behind backs and to faces. The outcome was predictable: nothing of any use whatsoever.
We were told that people were cowed by the vicious attacks of the first person I mentioned and so, in true co-dependent fashion, allowed the least stable person in the system make the most important decisions through bullying.
Another so called “leader” called us up and told us that we were not “permitted” to run a health freedom rally because “Health Freedom BELONGS [emphasis added] to the XXXX Foundation, as does all money involved in health freedom.” Again, not a very productive approach to winning a war, one might say.
And so it went. Petty jealousy, foolish self-interest and a movement so out of control that it could only be explained by ego or agents provocateur, or, as we believe the case to be, both.
Another example: in the US, where the Natural Solutions Foundation is based, we had a unique phenomenon develop during the most recent Presidential elections: through www.Change.org we were able to create the 10 top issues in the US according to people’s electronic votes. Those issues would, we learned, be presented to the newly elected President of the United States as the major concerns of the people of the US.
We seized the opportunity and created a health freedom item. We then wrote to every health freedom organization asking them to join with us to bring our issue to the forefront of awareness. The name of our organization did not appear anywhere in the item. We asked all of these organizations to urge their members to use their collective power and move the Health Freedom item up to number 1.
What did they do? Several of them actually banded together to urge their members to use the voting format to vote DOWN the health freedom item because they were not the initiating organization.
We made it, if I recall, to Number 8, if I recall, which was enough to be included in the top 10, but hardly where the issue should have been.
And, of course, every time the Natural Solutions Foundation accomplishes something like, for example, forcing the disastrous phony Food Safety Bill off the voting agenda, or stops the mandatory Swine Flu vaccine program the federal government was planning in the US, we get attacked as – of all things – “controlled opposition”.
Then there are the manufacturers and business people. Exactly as Lynn described it, when their ox is being gored, they have a hard time seeing it. When their ox is not being gored, they could not be less interested, many of them. Of course, there are the far sighted exceptions, but I share with Lynn the awareness of how important action is and how little the organizations and, in many cases, the companies involved are willing to see beyond their own noses.
So, in essence, it is up to us, the people.
The Health Freedom Organizations are either infiltrated, underfunded or ineffective. The Wellness companies are either blind or so burdened trying to stay in business that they cannot see the forest for the trees even though the forest is advancing like the forest in Macbeth!
What to do? Exert the strength of a powerful netroots and take this struggle on as your own. Because it is. What we are struggling about is not pills and powders. It is health and freedom, the right to control our own bodies, make our own choices.
It is the right to seek, or refuse, any treatment or health strategy which we desire.
It is the right to access clean, unadulterated food and high potency nutrients because we want to, under whatever terms we want to use them.
It is the right to share and study truthful information about the benefits of food and food components in a climate of free inquiry, not criminalization or regulatory gag rules, as is currently happening under Codex and in the US.
Just weeks ago, the European Parliament agreed to stop requiring the labeling of GMO “foods” and ingredients. This is a horrific blow to your freedom in Europe, which has already been accomplished in the US where such labeling is FORBIDDEN. This, of course, follows the secret meeting of the 27 heads of state of Europe last October 22 in London to find ways to compel the people of the EU to accept GMO foods despite their vigorous objections to it.
Gag rules to prevent health information (called “claims”) from being shared are the order of the day of the corrupt and industry-owned FDA (which we in the Natural Solutions Foundation refer to as the Fraud and Death Administration) and are one of the tools of Codex to make sure that your only options are drugs and, eventually, death, after serious profit from that death march.
Truly, either we do what needs to be done, or what they want done to us will prevail.

Not My Problem

In 2002 my magazine What Doctors Don’t Tell You first learned about plans within the European Union to radically restrict natural medicine across all member countries, starting with laws that would create a very low ceiling of ‘safe upper limits’ in vitamins.
Although the laws were ostensibly to create a level playing field within the European supplement market, the proposals bore the heavy hand of Big Pharma.
At the time, the solution appeared simple. The majority of people in the UK use some form of natural medicine. All we needed to do was to band together, whip up a national protest, and the laws would be stopped in their tracks.
In early 2003, we invited all the heads of the largest vitamin companies and representatives from all the leading natural medicine organizations – homeopathy, herbal medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and many others – to a meeting in central London.
Many of the organizations never showed up. Of the 50 or so who did, many groups felt that our concerns were alarmist. Others welcomed the new moves as good for business. A few attempting to fight the legislation were busiest fighting each other.
No group seemed able to see the bigger picture. Each organization was mainly concerned with whether their own business was under fire. If it wasn’t – and at the time it wasn’t for many of the disciplines – they weren’t interested. Not my problem.
Big Pharma had big plans all those years ago. Unless there is sufficient opposition, within the next year or two, laws will come into effect in Europe that will drastically restrict the access of all Europeans to high-dose vitamins and herbal medicine.
Most therapeutic herbal medicine, plus forms that are new to the West, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese herbal medicine, will effectively be banned. And although homeopathy has emerged unscathed from future EU law, the British Medical Association is working to eliminate funding for NHS homeopathic hospitals.
This pogrom will not end in Europe. The near identical international laws that have been drafted within the United Nations suggest that a well organized and concerted effort is under foot to finish off any alternative to orthodox medicine.
The plan is to watch Europe closely to assess the level of consumer protest. Thus far, that protest has been minimal. The two consumer groups that have maintained any sort of consistent attack – the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) and Consumers for Health Choice who have challenged the law and lobbied parliament are starved of funds.
The individual organizations to this day remain isolationist. Not my problem.
This attitude reminds me a bit of the speech given by Pasto[r] Martin Niemoller about the passivity of many German groups to the purging by the Nazis of group after group.
First they came for the Jews,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the communists,
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the trade unionists
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for me for me
and then there was no one left to speak out for me.
For all of us wishing to maintain alternatives to drug-based orthodox medicine, these laws are all of our problem, and every last one of us has an obligation to speak up now…..

Psychiatry’s 3D Shame: Deceive, Diagnose, Drug
Cassandra, the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy was cursed by Apollo, whom she offended, with always being right but never being believed. She warned her father not to open the gates to the Trojan Horse but no one listened. The horse was brought in and, the story goes, in the dead of night, its huge belly was opened and the warriors hidden within destroyed Troy. Being right did not make Cassandra happy.
Being right does not make me happy when I am writing about things like deceiving, diagnosing and drugging an entire population for the benefits of anyone but the patient.
Being right when I wrote, decades ago, that the use of psychiatric drugs, especially in children, was a disastrous, brain-damaging and insane social and medical policy. These drugs are untested, toxic and will create a society of pharmaceutically damaged people rather than ill people being well treated. Being right when I said that the Diagnostic and Statistical Manuals for Psychiatry were dangerous and would lead to the expansion of diagnoses and treatment to the point where there were none who dared resist and non who were not diagnosed. Being right when I wrote that Psychiatric diagnoses rested in marketing, not in science and that treating CFL (corporate financial lust) was fundamentally insane, but that the insanity did not lie with the patient.
And being right when I wrote that possible drugging would inevitably become mandated drugging, although neither the science or the treatments were any better.
Alas, like Cassandra, my predictions did not ring real when I wrote them but we have arrived where I saw us collectively headed. Dangerous drugs for everything that even smacks of real life and universal mandating just around the corner – if we turn that corner.
First, an admission: I am, by training, a Psychiatrist, encouraged by that training to treat children, adolescents and adults. But I was, I believe, saved from violating the basic ethical standard of medicine (and, with decency, every activity which involves any of us): Primum non nocere – Latin for “First Do No Harm”.
It is my considered belief, after considerable study, clinical practice and observation, that it is literally impossible to BE a practicing Psychiatrist, FOLLOWING THE PRACTICE GUIDELINES AND “STANDARD OF CARE IN THE COMMUNITY” PRACTICES, and NOT do harm, first, middle and last. That is why I have never treated anyone for anything using medication with two exceptions: a wildly psychotic 19 year old patient of mine in a State Hospital locked ward was suffering the torments of the damned (which is what he believed himself to be) as he unendingly hallucinated his inner terror. I prescribed for him enough sedation to allow him to stop screaming after 9 days of 24 hour nightmare. I was a First Year Resident at the time and knew nothing of orthomolecular psychiatry (the use of nutrients for mental relief and health), but I knew that I had to do something to help this young man by allowing him to reach into our world and us to reach into his. Once the madness-fear-madness cycle was broken, our work began. Ironically, my Chief Resident had just returned from a sojourn with the British Psychiatrist R. E. Liang, who saw schizophrenia as a glorious adventure so I had to go toe to toe with my superior and his superior and HIS superior to provide some respite for my young patient. I did and I won that battle.
Today, neither my Chief Resident, the well-known Dr. James Gordon, nor I would medicate that patient, both of us for very different reasons.
The other patient was a lady who had been addicted to Xanax(R) by her General Practitioner. I had to write a prescription for a small amount to complete weaning her from that intentionally highly addictive, and therefore highly profitable, psychoactive drug.
That takes care of my prescription history for psychiatric drugs over a 40 year career practicing medicine and psychiatry with some of the most seriously ill patients in the world. Successfully. Very Successfully.
So you can see that the article below chills me to the bone. It announces another step down the path of subservient lunacy for the disgraced profession of Psychiatry, a profession devoted to poisoning a specific target organ in the face of better, safer, cheaper, kinder and more effective options like nutrition and NeuroBioFeedback, appropriate therapies and social and health supports.
It is my considered view after 40 years of practice, that there is no place, that’s right, no place whatsoever, for psychiatric drugs. None. But, then, it is also my considered opinion that there is no place for any drugs in the Doctor’s office, although there is a place for them in the Emergency Room or ambulance while a patient is being transported there.
Psychiatrists no longer learn to talk to, and therefore, to listen to people. They are trained to look for flags that trigger this drug being prescribed or that one. The “literature” in their journals is mostly junk, paid for, authored by, and owned by the drug companies. But then, the “scientific journals” that publish them are, in reality, little more than advertising circulars for their magnificent, deceptive and callously dishonest advertisements. Just ask Marcia Angel, who resigned in protest as Editor of the [supposedly] prestigious New England Journal of Medicine because of the deep, dark and deadly corruption of the “peer review” system and the staggering lies upon which drug studies, and therefore prescription practices, rest.
In the Reuters article below you will see a future emerging in which there are no normals any more. Normal means having problems and problems are given names which suggest drug treatments. Suggest? Did I say suggest? Today, for most of us, most of the time, it is a suggestion. But it is a MUCH better business model if the suggestion is rhetorical and the requirement is absolute. More drugs sold. More side effects. More drugs added to the regimen. More side effects. More brain damage which looks exactly like the condition for which the drugs were given in the first place.
If this reminds you of the influenza shot for “protection” which turns out to be the CAUSE of the influenza “epidemic” each year which then leads to more calls for more vaccines “against” the influenza “epidemic” and drugs to “treat” what was induced by the shots: flu, cancer, autism, ALS, infertility, diabetes, etc., etc., etc., then you are paying attention. The business model is identical.
And just as the flu shot is transitioning from voluntary to mandatory, so the use of psychoactive drugs, all of them, for “diseases” and “conditions” that any decent human being would be ashamed to label another person with, let alone “treat” them for, will soon be mandatory unless we collectively say “NO!”, as we did to the Swine Flu vaccination (now included in this year’s dangerous seasonal flu shot.

Mental health experts ask: Will anyone be normal?
(Reuters) – An updated edition of a mental health bible for doctors may include diagnoses for “disorders” such as toddler tantrums and binge eating, experts say, and could mean that soon no-one will be classed as normal.
Leading mental health experts gave a briefing on Tuesday to warn that a new edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which is being revised now for publication in 2013, could devalue the seriousness of mental illness and label almost everyone as having some kind of disorder.
Citing examples of new additions like “mild anxiety depression,” “psychosis risk syndrome,” and “temper dysregulation disorder,” they said many people previously seen as perfectly healthy could in future be told they are ill.
“It’s leaking into normality. It is shrinking the pool of what is normal to a puddle,” said Til Wykes of the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College London.
The DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and contains descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders. It is seen as the global diagnostic bible for the field of mental health medicine.
The criteria are designed to provide clear definitions for professionals who treat patients with mental disorders, and for researchers and pharmaceutical drug companies seeking to develop new ways of treating them.
Wykes and colleagues Felicity Callard, also of Kings’ Institute of Psychiatry, and Nick Craddock of Cardiff University’s department of psychological medicine and neurology, said many in the psychiatric community are worried that the further the guidelines are expanded, the more likely it will become that nobody will be classed as normal any more.
“Technically, with the classification of so many new disorders, we will all have disorders,” they said in a joint statement. “This may lead to the belief that many more of us ‘need’ drugs to treat our ‘conditions’ — (and) many of these drugs will have unpleasant or dangerous side effects.”
The scientists said “psychosis risk syndrome” diagnosis was particularly worrying, since it could falsely label young people who may only have a small risk of developing an illness.
“It’s a bit like telling 10 people with a common cold that they are “at risk for pneumonia syndrome” when only one is likely to get the disorder,” Wykes told the briefing.
The American Psychiatric Association did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The scientists gave examples from the previous revision to the DSM, which was called DSM 4 and included broader diagnoses and categories for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism and childhood bipolar disorders.
This, they said, had “contributed to three false epidemics” of these conditions, particularly in the United States.
“During the last decade, how many doctors were harangued by worried parents into giving drugs like Ritalin to children who didn’t really need it?,” their statement asked.
Millions of people across the world, many of them children, take ADHD drugs including Novartis’ Ritalin, which is known generically as methylphenidate, and similar drugs such as Shire Plc’s Adderall and Vyvanse. In the United States alone, sales of these drugs was about $4.8 billion in 2008.
Wykes and Callard published a comment in The Journal of Mental Health expressing their concern about the upcoming DSM revision and highlighting another 10 or more papers in the same journal from other scientists who were also worried. DSM 5 is due to be published in May 2013.

We left our home at the Valley of the Moon Eco Demonstration Project in Volcan, Panama, www.NaturalSolutionsFoundation.org, to get on a plane to Panama City, then another one to Madrid and another one to Genva two days ago so that by the time we reached Switzerland we had not slept for about 48 hours. Why didn’t we take a quicker, more direct route? Because neither General Stubblebine nor I am willing to expose our bodies to the radiation hazard of full body scanners and neither Madrid nor Geneva airports use full body scanners.
We got to Geneva and continued our preparation for the meeting. You see, in order bring you intelligent, meaningful and precise information in our daily video and written reports and later create meaningful strategies to deal with Codex and its dangers, we need to do a major amount of planning and preparation.
Codex is designed to be overwhelmingly complex, detail driven and difficult to comprehend because the technical level of the considerations is so enormously demanding if you are going to understand it all. Delegates are just supposed to be so overwhelmed that they simply sink into a lulled position in which whatever the US or EU says is what they go along with, sort of like the courtiers just letting the red queen do what she likes in Alice and Wonderland because it is so much easier and safer.
But at Codex, as in so many other urgently important situations, the devil really IS in the details. Consider:
There are 15 Committee Reports to be studied from major codex Committees (http://www.codexalimentarius.net/web/archives.jsp) for the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC) session starting on Monday, July 5.
The Report of the Codex Executive Committee has 28 pages
The Committee on Food Labeling has 58 pages
The Committee on Contaminants in Foods has 69 pages
and so on through the 15 committees presenting their items for discussion at the CAC.
Potentially buried in each one of the clauses, phrases, reports and agenda items is a time bomb that can, despite its innocuous language, kill people through the implications and permissions granted via its legalese.
Nutrient Reference Values (NRVs) and GMO labeling are excellent, but by no means unique, examples. Both of these issues are highly technical and both, if carried out as the US desires, would lead to highly undesirable outcomes. NRVs are daily intake values of nutrients so low that they actually introduce and make permanent, the under-nutrition which WHO and FAO point out as the primary cause of the non-communicable, preventable, degenerative killer diseases: cancer, cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Misleading consumers into believing that their processed food provides adequate levels of vital nutrients, the NRVs are both a biochemical absurdity and an atrocity since they will, through their use on labels, lead people to believe that since their food is providing most or all of the NRVs, it provides the nutrients they need for a healthy life.
NRVs have been winding their way through the Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses (CCNFSDU) and the Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL). When South Africa was discussing them in 2005 at CCNFSDU, Dr. Grossklaus, the Chairman cut the delegate off at the knees when she mentioned “optimal nutrition” and said “It would be nice if Codex were about nutrition, but it isn’t. GMO labeling is another example, as is whether Codex should define consensus or a code of ethics for codex participants. In these discussions and decisions, information lies which could, going in one direction, change history and survival for good and, going in the other direction, could do exactly the opposite.
Each Agenda Item rests on a multi-year background with a huge pile of data and debate behind it. Having that perspective is essential to informed, effective dialogue with the delegates at Codex and in their home countries. And that is what we do at Codex! We take your interests, and those of well-nourished, autonomous, food independent people and “bang them against” what Codex is doing. The lives of food producers, food consumers and the planet turn on these tiny nuances since all of the Codex documents are written in such a way as to lull you into a fluorided haze of complacency. There is, however, nothing to be complacent about.
There is also nothing worth participating in at Codex. It is my contention that the United States needs to get out of Codex and do it now. We will lose nothing and grain a great deal, I believe, by loosening the hold that we have allowed the World Trade Organization, WHO, to place on us through trade agreements that can only inevitably degrade our food and our health unless we follow the Codex Two Step Process, as other nations have done successfully. If we were out of Codex, I believe that two things would happen:
First, it would be a great deal easier for interested parties to apply pressure to force the US to deviate from the Codex guidelines and standards since we would not have teams of experts ramming these guidelines and standards through Codex and, second, we would not be twisting and distorting the entire Codex process, making the decisions that the US wants, not the ones that protect the farmers, the consumers and the earth. In my career in international development, I saw, time and again, that the most successful projects were not the largest or the most carefully, centrally planned; they were the ones that arose from the bottom up. Likewise, successful social movements are emergent, evolving, radically self-organizing, and involve the dedicated efforts of many people, each finding the role that best uses his or her gifts and passions. Their scope and their success may not, at first, be readily apparent. Social movements grow and evolve around framing ideas and mutually supportive relationships instead of through top-down direction. New ideas gain traction, or not, depending on what works for those involved in the movement. Some alliances are fleeting; others endure.
The organism, not the machine, provides the appropriate metaphor. The relevant knowledge resides not in the heads of outside experts but in the people who populate the system. The challenge is to help them recognize, organize, and use that knowledge in ever more effective ways.
This is the model I think of when I think about what it will take to build the New Economy—one based on fulfilling the basic needs of people and planet—that we need. It’s also the way that that economy is already being built: step by step, in creative and surprising ways, by people looking for alternatives to a system that isn’t working for them.
To bring down the institutions of Empire, we must begin to build the rules, relationships, and institutions of a New Economy. These must be lived into being from the bottom up.
So how do you know whether your work is contributing to a big-picture outcome? If you can answer yes to any one of the following five questions, then be assured that it is.
1. Does it help discredit a false cultural story fabricated to legitimize relationships of domination and exploitation and to replace it with a true story describing unrealized possibilities for growing the real wealth of healthy communities?
2. Is it connecting others of the movement’s millions of leaders who didn’t previously know one another, helping them find common cause and build relationships of mutual trust that allow them to speak honestly from their hearts and to know that they can call on one another for support when needed?
3. Is it creating and expanding liberated social spaces in which people experience the freedom and support to experiment with living the creative, cooperative, self-organizing relationships of the new story they seek to bring into the larger culture?
4. Is it providing a public demonstration of the possibilities of a real-wealth economy?
5. Is it mobilizing support for a rule change that will shift the balance of power from the people and institutions of the Wall Street phantom-wealth economy to the people and institutions of living-wealth Main Street economies?
These are useful guidelines for setting both individual and group priorities. Bear in mind that in a systems-change undertaking of this magnitude, there is no magic bullet and no one is going to make it happen on their own, so don’t be discouraged if the world looks much the same today despite your special and heroic effort yesterday. It took five thousand years to create the mess we are in today. It will take more than a few days to set it right.

Polio vaccination is as great a scam as any other vaccination: there is no scientific evidence -none!- that vaccines work to prevent, mitigate or cure any disease. There is vast evidence that they work to weaken the nervous systems and that they intentionally, yes, intentionally, spread diseases which are vast profit sources and shorten lives and eliminate fertility.
We know, from the personal admission of Maurice Hilleman, PhD, or Merck Pharmaceuticals, that the polio vaccine’s leukemia virus contamination has been known for decades while the vaccine was administered to children around the world. Polio Research Gives New Insight Into Tackling Vaccine-Derived Poliovirus
ScienceDaily (June 24, 2010) — A vaccine-derived strain of poliovirus that has spread in recent years is serious but it can be tackled with an existing vaccine, according to a new study published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Vaccine-derived polioviruses can emerge on rare occasions in under-immunized populations, when the attenuated virus contained in a vaccine mutates and recombines with other viruses, to create a circulating vaccine-derived strain.
The researchers behind today’s study say their findings highlight the importance of completing polio eradication. They also say that should wild-type poliovirus be eradicated, routine vaccination with oral polio vaccines will need to cease, in order to prevent further vaccine-derived strains of the virus from emerging.
The study was carried out by researchers from the Medical Research Council Centre for Outbreak Analysis and Modelling at Imperial College London, working with the Government of Nigeria and the World Health Organization (WHO) research teams.
Poliovirus is highly infectious and primarily affects children under five years of age. Around one in 200 of the people infected with polio develop permanent paralysis, which can be fatal.
Polio was virtually wiped out by the early 2000s following a major vaccination drive by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, but since then the number of cases of paralysis reported has plateaued, remaining roughly constant at between one and two thousand each year from 2003 to 2009, dropping only recently in 2010.
The first reported polio outbreak resulting from a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus, known as a cVDPV, occurred in Hispaniola in 2000. Prior to today’s study, there was little evidence available about the severity and potential impact of this kind of poliovirus.
Although billions of doses of oral vaccine have been distributed in the last decade, just 14 cVDPV outbreaks have been reported, affecting 15 countries. These outbreaks have usually been limited in size.
For the new study, researchers looked at the largest recorded outbreak of a cVDPV to date, which began to circulate in Nigeria in 2005. The authors examined data from 278 children paralyzed by this cVDPV, and compared them with children paralysed by wild-type poliovirus in the country. Their analysis showed that this serotype 2 cVDPV is as easily transmitted and likely to cause severe disease as wild-type poliovirus of the same serotype.
The study also shows that vaccination with trivalent OPV, one of the main types of vaccine currently used to combat polio, is highly effective in preventing paralysis by this serotype 2 cVDPV.
The research shows that it is even more effective against cVDPV than against the wild-type polioviruses that are currently circulating, which can also be targeted with a different vaccine.
The new findings mean that it is particularly vital that efforts to vaccinate children with trivalent OPV continue in Nigeria and neighbouring countries, to protect children against all strains of polio. The scientists hope their findings will help countries to devise the right vaccine strategies to eradicate polio.
Helen Jenkins, the lead author of the study from the Medical Research Council Centre for Outbreak Analysis and Modelling at Imperial College London, said: “Our research shows that vaccine-derived polioviruses must be taken seriously and that we have the right tools to tackle them. We’ve had a lot of success against polio in the past and we’re optimistic that ultimately we should be able to eradicate it completely.
“However, our study shows that we can’t be complacent about the virus. It’s still vital for us to protect children from this dangerous and debilitating disease and we have to make sure we continue to vaccinate as many children as possible in affected countries for as long as wild-type poliovirus continues to circulate,” added Ms Jenkins.
Senior study author Dr Nicholas Grassly, also from the Medical Research Council Centre for Outbreak Analysis and Modeling at Imperial College London, added: “There has been some debate about the significance of circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses for the eradication initiative. Our research shows these viruses can be as pathogenic and transmissible as wild-type polioviruses and outbreaks must be responded to with just as much vigour.”
Dr Bruce Aylward, Director of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative at WHO, added: “These new findings suggest that if cVDPVs are allowed to circulate for a long enough time, eventually they can regain a similar capacity to spread and paralyse as wild polioviruses. This means that they should be subject to the same outbreak response measures as wild polioviruses. These results also underscore the need to eventually stop all OPV use in routine immunization programmes after wild polioviruses have been eradicated, to ensure that all children are protected from all possible risks of polio in future.”
This study was funded by the Medical Research Council and the Royal Society.
