David Korten is both a change agent and an observer of change. He has written a provocative article called, :The Big Picture: 5 Ways to Know if You’re Making a Difference”.
He says that if you can answer “YES!” to ONE of the following criteria, you are making a difference.
Here are his criteria, taken from the article which you can read below:
1. Does it help discredit a false cultural story fabricated to legitimize relationships of domination and exploitation and to replace it with a true story describing unrealized possibilities for growing the real wealth of healthy communities?
2. Is it connecting others of the movement’s millions of leaders who didn’t previously know one another, helping them find common cause and build relationships of mutual trust that allow them to speak honestly from their hearts and to know that they can call on one another for support when needed?

Millions of people demanded that they have the right NOT to receive the vaccine for the absurd and fraudulent “Level 6 Pandemic” nonsense known as H1N1 or Swine Flu and the US backed off from requiring mandatory vaccination.

We backed them off this crazed behavior in March, 2008 when they first flew this particular idea to see what would happen. What happened was that we, 688,000 strong, roared NO!, HELL NO! They predictably went away and, just as predictably, came back with this absurd power-grab to make all natural health products and services illegal.

The Big Picture: 5 Ways to Know if You’re Making a Difference

For the many millions of us working to create a better world, it is easy to feel discouraged by the seeming insignificance of even major successes relative to the scale of the problems we face as a nation and a species. Consumed by the details and challenges of our daily engagements, we may easily lose sight of the big picture of the powerful social dynamic to which our work is contributing.
Step back from time to time; take a breath, look out beyond the immediate horizon to bring that big picture back into perspective. Reflect in awe and wonder at the power of the larger social dynamic to which your work contributes.
In my career in international development, I saw, time and again, that the most successful projects were not the largest or the most carefully, centrally planned; they were the ones that arose from the bottom up. Likewise, successful social movements are emergent, evolving, radically self-organizing, and involve the dedicated efforts of many people, each finding the role that best uses his or her gifts and passions. Their scope and their success may not, at first, be readily apparent. Social movements grow and evolve around framing ideas and mutually supportive relationships instead of through top-down direction. New ideas gain traction, or not, depending on what works for those involved in the movement. Some alliances are fleeting; others endure.
The organism, not the machine, provides the appropriate metaphor. The relevant knowledge resides not in the heads of outside experts but in the people who populate the system. The challenge is to help them recognize, organize, and use that knowledge in ever more effective ways.
This is the model I think of when I think about what it will take to build the New Economy—one based on fulfilling the basic needs of people and planet—that we need. It’s also the way that that economy is already being built: step by step, in creative and surprising ways, by people looking for alternatives to a system that isn’t working for them.
To bring down the institutions of Empire, we must begin to build the rules, relationships, and institutions of a New Economy. These must be lived into being from the bottom up.
So how do you know whether your work is contributing to a big-picture outcome? If you can answer yes to any one of the following five questions, then be assured that it is.
1. Does it help discredit a false cultural story fabricated to legitimize relationships of domination and exploitation and to replace it with a true story describing unrealized possibilities for growing the real wealth of healthy communities?
2. Is it connecting others of the movement’s millions of leaders who didn’t previously know one another, helping them find common cause and build relationships of mutual trust that allow them to speak honestly from their hearts and to know that they can call on one another for support when needed?
3. Is it creating and expanding liberated social spaces in which people experience the freedom and support to experiment with living the creative, cooperative, self-organizing relationships of the new story they seek to bring into the larger culture?
4. Is it providing a public demonstration of the possibilities of a real-wealth economy?
5. Is it mobilizing support for a rule change that will shift the balance of power from the people and institutions of the Wall Street phantom-wealth economy to the people and institutions of living-wealth Main Street economies?
These are useful guidelines for setting both individual and group priorities. Bear in mind that in a systems-change undertaking of this magnitude, there is no magic bullet and no one is going to make it happen on their own, so don’t be discouraged if the world looks much the same today despite your special and heroic effort yesterday. It took five thousand years to create the mess we are in today. It will take more than a few days to set it right.

The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 4173), adopted by the House of Representatives has been initially approved by the Senate as S.3217. Sen. Scott Brown was the 60th vote for cloture. The bill appears to include language giving more power to the Federal Trade Commission to make general rules for interstate commerce that could be used to restrict truthful information about dietary supplements, by requiring expensive, “drug company” level clinical trials before vitamin companies could make claims about their products. This “reform” could hand-over the natural products industry to Big Pharma, which, over the past few years, has bought up most of the larger vitamin companies. The new rules could become a “barrier against entry” driving many smaller companies out of business.
We need to redouble our efforts to have the Senate/House Conference Committee write in protective language for dietary supplements and natural remedies.
We address this issue in an Action Item telling Congress to provide protective language for natural products which do not need the same level of substantiation (called “significant scientific agreement”) that drugs should require for public safety. The existing commercial standard of “competent and reliable scientific evidence” allows natural product marketers to rely on published literature and small-scale clinical studies appropriate for food products. From Dr. Rima: Bad News; Urgent Opportunity
Today the US Senate made a big mistake according to friends of helath and freedom: The Finance Reform bill has been passed. Now the House and Senate bills go to Conference Committee. That gives us our last chance to get rid of the atrocious Waxman amendment giving the FTC the power to demand drug-level clinical trials costing billions of dollars for safe, effective supplements before they can be marketed.
Small and medium size companies, however, do not have the resources to do this, nor should they have to, given that nutrients are, under color of law, FOODS.
The pitched battle against nutrition, nutrients, freedom, your health and, indeed, your very survivial. Under nutrion is a major cause of premature aging, chronic degernative illness like cancer, needless suffereing and early death. Coffee’s a Lifesaver for Women
“More good news for coffee drinkers: A newly published prospective public health study, from Japan, offered further proof that regular coffee consumption may have long-term health benefits (at least for half of the population).
The results of this large Japanese study appear in the current issue of the “Journal of Nutrition.” In this study, 18,287 men and 19,455 women (between the ages of 40 and 64 years) were prospectively included in the Miyagi Cohort Study, which began in 1990.
All of these volunteers were without any clinical history of cancer, heart disease, or stroke when they entered into the study. After an average of more than 10 years of follow-up, 2,454 of the volunteers died from various causes, including 426 cases of fatal cardiovascular disease and 724 fatal cases of cancer.
These volunteers were categorized and analyzed according to their self-reported daily consumption of coffee: “never-drinkers,” “occasional-drinkers,” one to two cups per day, and three or more cups per day. Other known risk factors for cardiovascular disease (including heart disease and stroke) and cancer were also factored into the analysis of the risk of death associated with coffee consumption for each volunteer.
Among the women in this study, increasing levels of daily coffee consumption were associated with a decreasing risk of death, due to any cause. (This “dose-dependent” relationship between daily coffee consumption and risk of death strongly suggests a direct clinical relationship between increased coffee consumption and a decreased risk of death.)
When compared to the women who did not drink coffee at all, the women who drank three or more cups of java per day were 25 percent less likely to die from any cause during this decade-long public health study. The coffee-associated reduction in the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was even more powerful (and also appeared to be “dose-dependent”), as the women who downed three or more cups of coffee per day experienced a whopping 55 percent decrease in the risk of death due to cardiovascular causes!
Finally, there was an apparent modest decrease in the risk of dying from colorectal cancer among the female coffee drinkers, but no other reduction in the risk of dying from cancer was observed in association with regular coffee consumption among these women volunteers.
Unfortunately this study did not identify any apparent beneficial health effects of regular coffee consumption in men. The reason for this gender-related disparity is not clear, although it is well known that there are major differences in both the incidence of cardiovascular disease between men and women, and differences in the way that cardiovascular diseases (and heart disease, in particular) manifest themselves in women versus men.
It is, therefore, possible, that cardiovascular disease factors that are more unique to women are directly impacted upon by regular coffee consumption. (At least no adverse effects of regular coffee consumption on male mortality were observed in this study.)
So, ladies, keep the favorable results of this clinical research study in mind whenever you order that next cuppa Joe!

The Good Bills
Foods or dietary supplements that may be of benefit for health conditions are, according to the FDA, unapproved “drugs.” Representatives Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) and Jared Polis (D-CO) the co-chairs of the Dietary Supplement Caucus, have introduced the Free Speech about Science Act — H.R. 4913. This bill would ensure our basic Free Speech in health matter, end censorship and, according to observers, “enable the natural health products community to share peer-reviewed scientific findings about natural health products with the public…”
We have long urged support for Representative Ron Paul’s bills – HR 3394, the Freedom of Health Speech Act, and HR 3395, the Health Freedom Act. This new bill joins them to offer the possibility of a real turn-around in US law; finally supporting the intent of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 (DSHEA) that we have broad freedom to use food for heatlh and fully rejecting the FDA’s discredited public policy of “HARMonizing” especially with international restrictions on our rights.
Additionally, we’ve joined with other health freedom advocates to begin to explore the idea of amending the US Constitution to better protect our health and food freedoms. We firmly believe that the Constitution already protects our freedom, but the Federal courts have made it increasingly difficult for citizens to seek redress of grievances in these matters, often determining that citizens do not have “standing to sue” to protect these rights. The Bad Bills
Sometimes a bill that does not seem to address food and health freedom actually contains the potential to harm our freedoms. The Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2009 (H.R. 4173), just adopted by the House of Representatives (and sent to the Senate as S.3217) includes language — offered by Rep. Waxman [D – CA] — giving more power to the Federal Trade Commission to make general rules for interstate commerce that could be used to restrict truthful information about dietary supplements, by requiring expensive, “drug company” level clinical trials before vitamin companies could make claims about their products. This “reform” could hand-over the natural products industry to Big Pharma, which, over the past few years, has bought up most of the larger vitamin companies. The new rules could become a “barrier against entry” driving many smaller companies out of business. Therefore, we oppose this bill.
UPDATE: the Senate approved the “reform” bill and it is now in the hands of the conference committee; we have modified the Action Item to reflect this and to request that the committee take steps to protect DSHEA products. How exactly does the bill threaten natural products:

Additionally, the Obama administration is pushing new farm controls which will drive small and independent farmers off the land, literally leaving the field to Agribiz, (implementing all of Codex through complete HARMonization and allowing the FDA to declare Marshal law) through Congress as fast as possible and have coordinated the House bills so there will be no debate and committee meetings are closed. The story will not be the same in the Senate, if we can generate enough public outrage!
Transparency, change, undoing Bush’s regulations, giving the public time to comment, grassroots anything? None are visible in the current legislative process. Our entire food system, and thus our health, is being given to the last people with any interest in quality or safety: Big Abgribiz. This is going on in the absence of public scrutiny. Those who do know what is happening, of course, have zero access to the process and to the major media. Meanwhile, the media is absent while Congress is moving at warp speed to sew this up.
Our strategy is to strongly oppose both the Wall Street “reform” bill and the Food “safety” bill, expecting that your continued PUSH BACK will continue to delay these bills until the Summer Recess. When Congress comes back into session in the Fall, it will be too preoccupied with the budget and with the elections for either bill to pass…

There is a GMO showdown occuring at the Codex Committee on Food Labeling. But from the actions of the US delegation, you wouldn’t know it, since they do not want the phrase “Genetically Modified” in the title of the Codex guideline document that is supposed to address labeling GMO products, and GMO-Free products. The United States is vigorously pursuing its policy to prevent the labeling or identification of GMOs (or GMO-Free) anywhere in the world. That means that no one on this planet will be able to protect self or family from the dangers of GMO plants or animals. No one will ever be able to determine that the fact that they cannot have children is due to the GMO food they have been eating, unknowingly. Or their Cancer, or their Lupus, or the death of their babies. Without detailed traceability, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, Jains and others whose religion teaches that the must not eat certain foods will ever again be able to determine that they have avoided the foods that will make them religiously impure.
Organic will cease to have any meaning whatsoever and all food will be contaminated, given sufficient time.
This is what is at stake at the Codex committee meeting beginning this weekend. Codex is the battleground for the future of food — will the pro-GMO Globalist Agenda prevail, or will enough nations stand up for their traditional agriculture and customs and refuse to engage in a false “consensus” that benefits only the Bigs — Big AgBiz, Big Pharma, Big Finance and Big Govt?
The United States FDA approves GMO foods and feeds without any safety testing of significance. Early on in the process of releasing GMOs, the company which owns the patented gene provides the FDA with whatever edited data it chooses to show that the organism is “safe”, no matter how weak, contrived or meaningless that data may be.
No further safety testing is carried out by the FDA, nor are further safety data reviewed, if they exist.
But, in the largest involuntary human experiment ever conducted, with zero informed consent possible, the world’s food, as it comes through the US food system, its seed system and its feed system, is contaminated with unlabeled, un-traceable GMOs. Any long term (or, for that matter, short term) effects will never be known because who is eating what GMO gene, promoter virus or bacterial marker sequence is totally unknowable. This is the effect of FDA refusing to require “truthful and not misleading” GMO labeling. In deed, the agency, in a true display of the arrogance of power, believes it has authority to censor even “GMO Free” labels!
