Chile is low-hanging fruit for Monsanto and its evil siblings. They propagate their horrific seeds here but Chilean law does not allow the use of GMOs in the food supply produced here.
Imported? NO PROBLEMO! as they say here. That’s why I NEVER eat anything imported from the US here in Chile, by the way.
But the irrevokable treaty called UPOV 91 (and known locally as the “Monsanto Law” ) which would turn Chile into an agricultural clone of the Agro-Disaster known as the United States has been pressing for final Senate ratification.
Until today.
The Natural Solutions Foundation has a magnificent researcher who is part of our team here.
She told me two weeks ago that the Minister of Agriculture had thrown his weight behind the “Ley Monsanto” (Monsanto Law) implementing the international UPOV ’91 “intellectual property in seeds” regime; friendly to the Evil Siblings, not at all friendly to heritage, organic seed savers!
I told her to use the internet to find the dirt on him. And did she ever!
He and his parents own a company that sells the huge combines that monocrop farming uses AND sells the GMO seeds that will make a [literally] killing if UPOV 91 is ratified.
She asked the Natural Solutions Foundation Trustees what to do with this information and we said “DISSEMINATE IT!”
She did.
The press picked it up. The alternative media picked it up.
The opposition parties picked it up and Senator Navarro picked it up – and is bringing the Minister of Agriculture to Court on Conflict of Interest Charges, which are very serious here.
Because of this, the definitive vote, scheduled for yesterday, did not happen and this morning the President of Chile sent a letter to the Congress advising them to drop the whole process.
Now that is GOOD NEWS and we rejoice for Chile that our 3 million emails and the steadfastness of freedom and health advocates have brought this about.
But the current government leaves office when the new President, Michelle Bachelet, is sworn in this coming March.
It is rumored that she spent 6 months in the US as Monsanto’s guest and it was she, in her previous term as President, who brought the Monsanto Law forward and urged its ratification.
So we are good for the moment, but not out of the woods yet.
The Evil Siblings do not go gently into that good night. They need a little push back…
Your voices, outside Chile, told the government that the world was watching and would not buy contaminated food from that country (and food export is Chile’s second industry, after mining).
