What Happened at Codex Committee on Nutrition Today? Read On!
CCNFSDU (Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses) concluded its deliberations today with an overtime session that ran for several hours extra.
Delegates dutifully sat through hours and hours and hours of simultaneous translation of procedural minutia masking potentially cataclysmic impact of decisions taken or shot down by the heavy-handed dictates of the Chair.
For example, when global nutrition was (briefly) under discussion and an NGO’s Delegate correctly made reference to the global soil depletion meaning that nutrient values of foods grown in them are seriously deficient, Dr. Grossklaus refused to even allow that comment into the report of the meeting which will be approved on Saturday at the final session of this year’s CCNFSDU meeting.
Nothing new there!
What is new today is that we made contact with several new partners in global health, countries which want our presence on the ground in their countries to help their decision makers to counteract the potentially lethal decisions of Codex and walk them through the powerful Codex Two Step Process so that they can protect their people, their food supply and their trading options. In fact, the Natural Solutions Foundation was specifically invited to attend the second meeting of the Codex Working Committee on the Labeling of Genetically Modified (GM) Foods in January, 2008 (Accra).
When we suggested to the inviting Delegate that not only did food have to be labeled with the information that it contained GM food, but that it had to be labeled with the specific strains of GM food that it contained to establish traceability, liability, and, eventually, safety or lack thereof, she was very excited by that notion and promised to take it up with her country as soon as she got home since that was a new concept for her nation.
The Minister of Health of another African nation asked us to bring our strategies to end population hunger which are part of the via the International Decade of Nutrition to his country immediately following the meeting in Ghana so we can set up test crop areas to help end their food shortage and chronic hunger in their country.
And then a third African country approached us and asked if we would come to meet the President, Minister of Health, Codex Committee members, and other decision makers to help them implement the Two Step Process. In this country, people are becoming so environmentally sensitive that they cannot eat the food available and this has become a major public health problem. The food they import is so toxic that their people are dying because of it.
Being There Makes All the Difference!
Our answer was the same to each of them: "Yes!" We will come! We have a body of supporters tht understand that global health impacts us all and that while problems are being globalized, solutions must be "planetized".
