Poly-MVA — The First Dietary Supplement to be Cleared by the FDA for Use in a Cancer Study
CancerAssistanceCenter.org announces the immediate availability of free information packets for cancer patients and physicians regarding Poly-MVA, a dietary supplement that has been shown to be very effective in clinical studies conducted by a renowned board-certified oncologist, Dr. James Forsythe. When Poly-MVA (Palladium Lipoic Complex) was administered to terminally ill (Stage 4) cancer patients as an adjunct to the therapy they received during the 2005-2008 clinical studies completed by Dr. Forsythe, the Overall Survival Rate was 71% in the Poly-MVA group, an extraordinary result in view of the fact that less than 10% of those patients would have been expected to survive 2 years if they had continued to receive conventional therapy alone.
(PRWEB) June 14, 2008 — CancerAssistanceCenter.org announces the immediate availability of free Cancer Information packets for cancer patients and physicians regarding Poly-MVA, a dietary supplement that has been shown to be very effective in clinical studies conducted by a renowned board-certified oncologist, Dr.
Dr. Forsythe’s work was compelling and significant enough to convince the FDA to approve, for the first time in history, a cancer-related IND study (Investigational New Drug study) utilizing a dietary supplement. This FDA approved study has been designed to further validate the benefits of Poly-MVA for cancer patients. View Dr. Forsythe’s Research on Poly-MVA here Cancer Research
Poly-MVA was invented by Dr. Merrill Garnett, a biochemist. It is a dietary supplement based on the nontoxic lipoic acid-palladium complex (LAPd). LAPd is a liquid crystal that works in cancer cells by transferring excess electrons from membrane fatty acids to DNA via the mitochondria. It appears to be a safe and effective dietary supplement for cancer patients when used with or without conventional chemotherapy. Its safety profile is excellent and there were no treatment related deaths, significant adverse reactions or negative interactions with chemotherapy or hormonal treatments. The best responding tumors in Dr. Forsythe’s studies were prostate cancer, breast cancer and lung cancer. Some of the remissions in Dr. Forsythe’s studies involved brain cancer patients who had tried and failed conventional cancer treatment protocols. In addition to the remissions reported by Dr. Forsythe, there are other cancer remission case reports written by the patients themselves that can be found on the Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Research Web site: Cancer Survivors
Is Poly-MVA the long waited solution for terminally ill cancer patients? Let’s compare the facts. According to a report from the Journal of Clinical Oncology (2004) 16:549-560, the 5-Year Overall Survival Rate for Stage 4 cancer patients receiving chemotherapy treatments was 2.1%. In the clinical study conducted by Dr. Forsythe, 71% of the cancer patients in the Poly-MVA group were still alive and enjoying a good quality of life after 2 years. Additional articles on can be seen at: Cancer Articles
”Will (the FDA) eventually re-categorize Poly-MVA as a drug? Quite possibly,” said Dr. Frank Antonawich, Senior Scientist at Garnett McKeen Laboratory and Biology Dept. Chairman at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, New York. “We’ve received an investigational new drug application from the FDA, and we’re in the process of running tests…who knows, maybe in the future every physician will prescribe Poly-MVA as part of their patient’s chemo and radiation package. That would be phenomenal too.” — St. Josephs College Magazine, February 2008, Vol. 6 No. 1 (Cancer Research)
Dr. Albert Sanchez, Founder of the Foundation for Advancement in Cancer Research, has been working with Poly-MVA ever since the supplement was first introduced 13 years ago. ”When Dr. Forsythe began his now famous clinical studies utilizing Poly-MVA for Stage 4 cancer patients who had failed conventional treatment, we had already been documenting one remission after another during the previous 9 years as one cancer patient after another realized the benefits of taking this extraordinary dietary supplement,” said Dr. Sanchez. ”But we needed to move beyond purely anecdotal evidence in order to have a scientifically valid basis for bringing this news to the world. We now have that validation and I consider it my duty to shout the news from every mountain top.”
While there are many questions waiting for answers and additional studies to be completed, life cannot be put on hold. For further information about the science supporting the use of Poly-MVA by cancer patients, please contact:

Songhai, Porto Novo, Benin
Day 3, April 19, 2008
We landed today in Cotonou, the capital of Benin and the shoving began: African airports are like airports everywhere, but worse. Everyone apparently needs to be first, whether there is any point to being first or not.
I don’t need to be first and neither do General Stubblebine or Tyson, so we were pretty close to last – last off the airplane, last through customs, last to get a baggage cart, last to get our luggage.
Tyson, however, was nearly the first of our party to get vaccinated! I am strongly averse to vaccination and, to my mind, the more you study any one particular vaccine, the more you NEVER want to take that preparation. That is certainly the case with Yellow Fever Vaccine. Although many countries in Africa require proof of vaccination against this devastating disease (unnecessary, really, for people who have access to good health, Vitamin C and silver solutions) for entry. Bert, Tyson and I were able to produce exemption letters for our visas and secured our visas for Benin without any difficulty.
I had forgotten that, once you clear passport control and get your entry stamp in Benin, there are two guys in (what once were) white coats asking to see your Yellow Fever Vaccination card with a valid stamp on it. We speak English. They speak French. The possibility of communication was nill to none. Gen. Stubblebine and I tried the words for “Exemption letter†in as many ways as we could think of. We failed miserably. Finally, ready to go home, I suppose, since we were close to the last people on the plane, the two vaccine police men gave up in exasperation and waved their hands, shouting, “Go! Go!†and waving us through the door.
Tyson, however, was separated from us and was not so lucky. Before he knew what had happened, he was sitting in the Health Officer’s Office being asked in French for something (he does not speak French). He, too, kept saying that he had an exemption letter (from me, in fact!) but there seemed to be no uptake on that. He looked up from getting out the letter from his papers and saw that the Health Officer was bending over a refrigerator from which he took a vial and a syringe. “No! NO!” Tyson said and waved his letter of exemption around (probably a little wildly – I know that is the way I would have waved mine!). The man got out a yellow International Vaccination Card, stamped it and said, in perfect English, “Give me 10 Euros [ Approximately $16 US].
Tyson gave him the Euros and the man waved him out of the office WITH a vaccination card but WITHOUT the vaccination!
Once we got through the pushing and shoving at the luggage conveyor, we exited past a Beninese guard who checked every single one of our luggage tags to make sure they matched the numbers on our luggage. With all the people ahead of us, can you imagine how long that took?
Finally we exited the baggage area only to realize that the customs people were opening every suit case of every traveler. I stopped dead and looked around in utter dismay: It was already 9:45 PM and we were clearly going to be here for hours. For some reason (I have no idea what it might have been), the customs official nearest to me looked up, saw me and said, again, “Go! Go!” and we made our way out into the crowd waiting to greet their friends and relatives, associates and colleagues. There was a gentleman in a brilliant and distinctive African suit waving a very welcome “Songhai” sign. We clustered around him and he led us to the van he had brought to pick us up from Songhai.
Because our plane had not come in the night before, his two hour round trip to the airport (and the fuel which is so important in this very poor country) was wasted. He was, however, gracious and helpful nonetheless.
When we got to Songhai Center about an hour later, we were greeted in this oasis of plenty and prosperity in the middle of want and hardship by Father Godfrey Nzamjou, the man whose inspiration lives and breaths in Songhai. Although the restaurant closes at 10, he and his staff had kept it open for us (how different from Paris!) and we had an hour or so to converse and orient ourselves.
We were led to a modern building with suites and bedroom, each with a shower and private bath.
The next day, we toured the compound in the morning and saw the ingenuity, love and tenderness, yes, tenderness with which this land has been turned from a desert into a Garden, perhaps a Garden of Eden. Today, in a world where food riots are becoming more commonplace daily, the fertility which has been coaxed from the land is an urgent lesson for possibilities and a call to action. The Panama Santa Clara Project will follow the Songhai model for farming without waste or pollution. Imagine what we can do with land that is so abundantly fertile!
The heat was truly ferocious and about 11:00AM we retired indoors because anywhere outside was impossibly hot. We had more excellent food, all grown here, and waited for Fr. Godfrey to come back to us for more discussion.
Around 4 PM he arrived and said, “OK. Now you know what we have at Songhai. What are you looking for?” We spoke at depth and at length and videotaped the discussion. I think it is important that you see that and will mount it as soon as we have enough bandwidth to make that possible. It was a wonderful conversation in which we expounded on our dream and Fr. Godfrey said that this was what he had been waiting for.
We agreed that we must support each other’s work and he reaffirmed that he will, without a doubt, come to Panama to set up the design for the zero emissions farm complete with bio-digester and bio-gas for fuel independence as well as power independence. Fr. Godfrey is the proud “papa” of the largest bio-gas facility in Africa. Cheap, easy and clean, bio-gas can heat our water, run our generators, pump our liquids, grind our grains, etc. And we will learn from a master!
But Songhai is much more than just a fuel independent system. Please take a moment when the tape is mounted to watch it and capture the shared dream of this world leader whose Center is a recognized United National Center Excellence in Africa.
After more chat and dinner (outstanding, of course), Tyson, General Bert and I set to working through the immense number of details for our community in Panama, the Santa Clara ARC, with the clear understanding that what we are doing now is highly preliminary since the community will ultimately make these decisions for itself.
That took us late into the night and we fell asleep quite exhausted. Oh, by the way, there was still no internet connection.
Day 4, April 20, 2008
Today was our “BIG DAY” at Songhai Center. Father Godfrey is immensely busy and he agreed to give us most of a full day to discuss our plans and possible working together in considerable detail – that is a large part of why we came.
We began with breakfast at 8 AM in the restaurant which serves about 200 meals per day to visitors. All food served here is grown here or on other Songhai Centers so everything is not only fresh, but free of pesticides and all other types of synthetic, chemical additives. It is wonderful knowing that every bite was grown by the labor of people who love the land and understand how to nurture it so it can nurture them. We are very eager to replicate that loving relationship between our food and our selves as we come to create the farm and farm school which will be a core activity of the Santa Clara ARC.
We took a tour of the facility including the foundry, the kiln, the fields, the food processing areas, the store, the animal sheds, the fish pond, the composing area, the bio gas facility, etc., etc. All of this amazing integrated farming has been created here in the total absence of fertile soil. Fr. Godfrey told us that he had worked 15 years of the 20 that he has been here to create this astonishing fertility. We start in Panama with astonishingly fertile land!
Songhai’s rich productivity daily feeds 1500 people (300 workers and their families, which average 5 people), about 100 students who are in training, typically for 18 months, and the 200 guests who come to the African and Western restaurants. I think it is an easy leap to conclude that our fertile farm will be producing much more than we members of the community, guests and health center clients can consume so it is reasonable to expect that one center of profit for the Santa Clara ARC will be the distribution and sale of outstanding food!
Because of the intense heat, everything stops for several hours during the middle of the day. Everything, that is, except lunch. We wove our way from shade spot to shade spot to the restaurant for lunch and much talk about what we have seen. Tyson is a black smith/iron worker so he was particularly fascinated by learning what he needs to know to make the bio gas apparatus and by the machines which Songhai designs and makes on site.
Later, Fr. Godfrey came to where we are staying, where there is, mercifully, air conditioning and we started to talk together. I asked him how many other groups like ours had come to set up sister facilities as we are doing.
Tyson had the foresight to set up a video camera to film this discussion and it was a great decision. The video is not compatible with my computer so we have to download it to a disc and upload it that way. Clearly we do not have the opportunity here in Songhai, but we will do so shortly.
The upshot of the discussion was that we are what Fr. Godfrey has been waiting for as a partner community! We will bring our experience in order to work toward sister health centers in Parakou, Benin and Santa Clara, Panama. He will use his experience to make Santa Clara a full zero emissions facility farming center and school.
Meanwhile, we had missed our appointment with Col. Mikode, the Codex Contact Point for Benin because we arrived more than a full day late. This delay winds up having significant impact on Codex. Read on.
Dinner, then more intense discussion and off to bed.
Day 5, April 21, 2008
Today we started the day with meeting for about an hour during breakfast with Fr. Godfrey. By the way, Songhai makes its own delicious yogurt. After about an hour, he had other things to do before heading off to Nigeria to meet with government officials there to replicate the Songhai model there. There are also two people from separate projects doing similar things in Nigeria. One is, like Gen. Stubblebine, a General.
Sometime later, Col. Mikode and Pascal, the head of the Benin Horticultural Research Station came to see us. They had good news and bad news for us.
The good news was that they had prepared a budget and program for the agricultural project using magnets to treat the water used to grow plants. Preliminary results suggest significant increases in crop yield, nutrient density, plant vigor and significant decreases in water utilization. Given the rapidly worsening shortage of food in the word due to climate change and diversion of food crop acreage to biofuels (which cost at least 29% more energy than they produce so the bargain is a very, very bad one for the planet, its carbon balance and its people) the ability to increase yield and nutritional value, while eliminating all requirements for pesticides and other chemicals, is a very important asset. Equally important, perhaps, is the reduction in water usage to get stronger and more vigorous plants.
I had been perplexed by the fact that nothing was happening with the agricultural magnet project – nothing. I had designed a simple (and, I hope, elegant) design which would test the hypotheses of increased crop yield, increased nutrient density, increased plant vigor and decreased water usage but they require actually being carried out to show anything. I could not understand it when I got an email saying that the project was postponed until they got the money to carry it out.
When Pascal presented me with the document outlining the costs, I nearly fell off my chair. Instead of 6 test beds, there were 33. Instead of raised beds edged with scrap lumber of corrugated tin or sand bags, they were asking for 4.2 metric tons of concrete, thousands of bricks, etc.
It was clear that we needed to talk!
The next interesting meeting was a telephonic one with Dr. Koura, who was supposed to serve as the Beninese delegate to the Codex Committee On Food Labeling next week in Ottawa. She had informed the Codex Contact Point, Col. Mikode, that she would not be funded by the WHO Trust Fund at 11 PM on Saturday evening but that email was not read until 9 AM Monday morning (yesterday). That means that Benin will not have a voice at this important Codex meeting where the initiative begun by the African nations at the meeting in Ghana in February this year to demand labeling of Genetically Modified Organisms was pushed forward so impressively.
I asked our Natural Solutions Foundation Trustees if we should not host (i.e., pay for) the Beninese delegate to make sure that there was a strong voice from this country at the Codex meeting. We quickly agreed and the next thing we needed to do was convince Dr. Kora and the Beninese government that this was a good idea.
Col. Mikode had no problem with it and said that if Dr. Koura was willing, so was he.
Day 6, April 22, 2008
Early this morning Tyson, General Stubblebine and I set off with a translator to visit Pascal at the Horticultural Research Station to find out what had gone wrong with the Agricultural Magnet project and retrieve 20 pairs for use here at Songhai.
Because we had a translator with us this time, as opposed to the last time we talked with Pascal, we discovered what the problem was: Language difficulties led to Pascal believeing that since we had identified 11 potential crops for the experiment, he would need to conduct the experiment with 3 beds of each crop. The undertaking would be huge and he wanted to build structures to make it possible. I explained that we wanted to choose 2 crops from the 11 and Pascal heaved a huge sigh of relief. We walked out to the fields to see where the projects would take place and Pascal has already applied the magnets to a buried rigid water pipe in preparation for our visit. Once we got the miscommunication out of the way, it became clear that a real project using amaranth and tomatoes would be carried out and carried out well.
We are eager to get those results and the results from the Songhai application. It is our hope that the results are robust enough that we can begin to change agricultural practices in many places in the world. It is essential, the Natural Solutions Foundation believes, to reclaim food production, eliminating pesticides and other dangerous chemicals, and making ti clear that the best crop yield is produced by natural means, not by GM crops. Dr. Koura, on the other hand, when we finally did get together this afternoon, was not so sure it was a good idea. She had “turned off” the process by telling her bosses that she was not, after all, going and was adamantly reluctant to tell them that she could now go under our sponsorship.
We tried every which-a-way to Sunday to persuade her, but she was not movable. We got ready to write to the US and UN Ambassadors from Benin to see if they could provide a person to attend the meetings (it is much easier to get a Canadian visa from the US) when we got a piece of very bad news, indeed.
This information makes us think that we are seeing a pattern: The Ugandan Codex delegate had taken the ball into his own hands and arranged an African strategy session on GM labeling the day before the CCFL meeting was to begin. He is a credentialed delegate from a member nation. Canada denied him a visa twice.
The strategy of the power brokers is clear: fix it so the opposition cannot show up and then claim that the process is legitimate. That is pretty much the same as arresting the opposition and claiming that your election was democratic (or counting the votes on a programmable electronic voting machine with a predetermined outcome, for that matter!)The Codex process is far from legitimate. Our Trustees have just spent an extended period on the phone working out our next strategic moves to deal with this new tactic.
More to follow.

In what looks very much like a cover up, the United States Government appears to be doing its best to keep evidence of vaccine harm out of the courts. The Independent Media Center of Winnipeg, Canada, http://winnipeg.indymedia.org/item.php?12522S, published the article number 1 below
Dr. Jon Polling is a Neurologist. he is also the father of the most famous autistic child in America right now, Hannah Poling. In a historic concession, US Assistant Attorney General Peter Keisler and other Justice Department officials conceded on November 9 that Hanna “had a pre-existing mitochondrial disorder that was ‘aggravated’ by her shots, and which ultimately resulted in an ASD diagnosis†or, more specifically, in a diagnosis of “regressive encephalopathy (brain disease) with features consistent with autistic spectrum disorder, following normal development.â€
While they did not go as far as saying that vaccination caused the neurological collapse of the previously healthy child, they did admit that for a child with a mitochondrial disorder, the shots could “aggravate” a tendency toward autism. It is the first time that the US has come even this close to acknowledging the role of vaccines in any chronic neurological injury.
For the approximately 1000 cases behind this one, having the information available in those cases is critically important. For the perhaps millions of children whose parents may seek redress for the harm done to their children in civil courts, since the FDA has removed any liability in criminal court for any vaccine manufacturer if the vaccine is approved by the FDA, this move is clever but both unjust and unjustified.
In responding to another physician’s questions and comments about his daughter’s autism, Hannah’s neurologist father, Dr. Jon Poling, offers us a clear and cogent look at mitochondrial dysfunction or disease and what it might mean to autism. His openness is to be commended. The attempt to close the records on the evidence in about 1000 cases in the Special Masters Court for vaccine injury is shameful.
Natural Solutions Foundation salutes Dr. Poling, his wife and Hannah for staying the long and difficult course in bringing the US to this concession. It is a door which others will wide. Thank you, Dr. Poling, Mrs. Poling and Hannah for your bravery and perseverance. Welcome to our Hall of Fame!
And, at the same time, the Natural Solutions Foundation nominates the US Justice Department to our Hall of Shame for seeking to protect Big, Bad Pharma at the expense of the parents and children of autists. While it is likely that autism is a final common pathway for a complex and multifaceted disease, your evidence development in these cases could help untold numbers of families and children. Instead, you play tragic favorites: money over justice, and protect the makers of known toxins, injected into babies bodies over and over and over. Shame on you!
Dr. Poling’s Open Letter to Dr. Steven Novella is listed below as Article 2
While parts of it may be a bit technical, it is worth reading because it elegantly demolishes the objections being raised to the obvious conclusion that Hannah was a healthy child whose vaccination schedule produced a life-long tragedy – an avoidable tragedy – for Hannah and her family.

Government Requests Vaccine Records Be Sealed

US Government Asks Court to Seal Vaccine Records
thanks to The Reiki Matrix
By Todd Zwillich
WASHINGTON – Attorneys for the Bush Administration asked a federal court on Monday to order that documents on hundreds of cases of autism allegedly caused by childhood vaccines be kept from the public.
Department of Justice lawyers asked a special master in the US Court of Federal Claims to seal the documents, arguing that allowing their automatic disclosure would take away the right of federal agencies to decide when and how the material should be released.
Attorneys for the families of hundreds of autistic children charged that the government was trying to keep the information out of civil courts, where juries might be convinced to award large judgments against vaccine manufacturers.
The court is currently hearing approximately 1,000 claims brought by the families of autistic children. The suits charge that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, which until recently included a mercury-containing preservative known as thimerosal, can cause neurological damage leading to autism.
Federal law requires suits against vaccine makers to go before a special federal “vaccine court” before any civil lawsuit is allowed. The court was set up by Congress to speed compensation claims and to help protect vaccine makers from having to pay large punitive awards decided by juries in state civil courts. Plaintiffs are free to take their cases to state courts if they lose in the federal vaccine court or if they don’t accept the court’s judgment.
The current 1,000 or so autism cases are unusual for the court. Because it received so many claims, much of the fact-finding and evidence-gathering is going on for all of the cases as a block.
Monday’s request by the Bush Administration would prevent plaintiffs who later go to civil court from using some relevant evidence generated during the required vaccine court proceedings.
Plaintiffs’ attorneys said that the order amounted to punishment of the families of injured children because it would require them to incur the time and expense of regenerating evidence for a civil suit.
“Wouldn’t it be a shame if at the end of the day our policy would be to compensate lawyers,” said Jeff Kim, an attorney with Gallagher Boland Meiburger & Brosnan. The firm represents about 400 families of autistic children who received the MMR vaccine.
Kim accused the government of trying to lower “a shroud of secrecy over these documents” in order to protect vaccine manufacturers, who he said were “the only entities” that would benefit if the documents are sealed.
While federal law clearly seals most documents generated in individual vaccine cases, it has never been applied to a block proceeding like the one generating evidence in the autism cases.
Administration lawyers told Special Master George Hastings that they requested the seal in order to preserve the legal right of the Secretary of Health and Human Services to decide when vaccine evidence can be released to the public.
Justice Department attorney Vincent Matanoski argued that to let plaintiffs use the vaccine court evidence in a later civil suit would confer an advantage on plaintiffs who chose to forgo federal compensation.
“There is no secret here. What the petitioners are arguing for are enhanced rights in a subsequent civil action,” Matanoski said of the plaintiffs. “They’re still going to have unfettered use within the proceedings.”
Hastings would not say when he would issue a ruling on whether to seal the court documents, but did say that his decision would be “very prompt.”
DR. JON POLING TO DR. STEVEN NOVELLA ON AGE OF AUTISM
By Dr. Jon Poling, father of Hannah Poling.
OPEN LETTER TO DR. STEVEN NOVELLA
IN RESPONSE TO “Has the Government Conceded Vaccines Cause Autism?”
Dr. Novella,
Thank you for generating interesting discussion regarding my little girl,
Hannah Poling. I would like to give you additional information in order to
generate further productive discussions on this matter amongst the neurology
community. This information should assist you, Dr. DiMauro, and Dr.
Trevethan, who have also commented publicly, to formulate better theories as
to the significance of Hannah’s mitochondrial dysfunction in relation to her
autism.
1. Mito Dysfunction or Mito Disease? Chicken or Egg?
To begin with, I would like to point out that the spectrum of mitochondrial
dysfunction is probably considered more broad and complex than the spectrum
of neurobehavioral abnormalities seen with autism. Dysfunction of the
mitochondria, specifically dysfunction of the oxidative phosphorylation
pathway, most likely contributes, but may not be the cause of many
diseases—including Parkinson’s disease, Friedreich’s Ataxia, Alzheimer
disease, etc. Thus, it is probably incorrect to refer to mitochondrial
dysfunctional and mitochondrial disease interchangeably. Indeed, the role of
the dysfunctional mitochondrial are yet to be clarified in these diseases.
Thus, I will refer to Hannah’s metabolic condition as a mitochondrial
dysfunction, not a mitochondrial disease.
2. Mito Genetic Finding? Mito mtDNA ‘red herring’ ?
ADDITIONAL GENETIC TESTING NOT AVAILABLE IN THE J CHILD NEUROL CASE REPORT:
Dr. Shoffner performed genetic testing on both Hannah’s muscle and her
mother’s leukocytes subsequent to our case report. Hannah (muscle mtDNA) and
her mother (leukocyte mtDNA) were both found to be HOMOPLASMIC for the mtDNA
T2387C transition mutation.
Our analysis of this genetic finding in the mtDNA was significantly
different than those of other physicians that I’ve seen in scientific blogs
or commentary. I suspect it would have been fatal to both Hannah and her
mother if this homoplasmic mutation was pathogenic since (as I am sure you
are aware) the mutation is on the 16S ribosomal subunit which is highly
conserved. Thus, this mutation probably represents a benign polymorphism
rather than pathogenic mutation. It is unlikely, but possible, that the
mutation is significant to Hannah, but in such a case, it must work in
concert with other nuclear genes to cause her mitochondrial dysfunction. To
our knowledge, this point mutation has not been reported in cases similar to
Hannah’s.
3. Encephalitis? Metabolic Encephalopathy? Or “Regressive Encephalopathy
with Features of Autism Spectrum Disorderâ€
The other interesting term you used was encephalitis rather than
encephalopathy. We are not sure that she had an “-itis†but we did clearly
document a regressive encephalopathy based on not only our parental
reporting, but also based on the pediatrician’s documents, affidavits from
other family members, and the growth curve measurements (injury pattern).
Early on in the regression we did note back arching (opisthotonus), fever,
and disrupted sleep. Although fever occurred a lumbar puncture was not
performed.
An interesting developing story in autism research is the
immune/inflammatory connection. In her senior resident thesis, Dr. Anne
Comi, a former JHU colleague, along with Dr. Andy Zimmerman, reported, the
increased prevalence of autoimmune disease in families of autistic
offspring. Interesting, Hannah also has a maternal family history of
autoimmune disease. Dr. Carlos Pardo, another one of my former chief
residents, along with Andy and Dr. Vargas, published a beautiful study in
the Archives of Neurology, demonstrating neuroinflammation on autopsy of
brain samples and inflammation cytokine markers in the CSF of individuals
with Autism. The interesting thing was that inflammation was demonstrated in
autopsy specimens from adults as old as 44 years of age. The conclusion was
that further research would be required to determine if inflammation was a
primary disorder in autism or; alternatively, if inflammation and microglial
activation was secondary to neurodegeneration. Dr. Sudhir Gupta at UC Irvine
has a nice model of how the two pathways of neuroinflammation and mito
dysfunction may not be mutually exclusive. This remains to be seen; however,
study of mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroinflammation hold the promise of
treatment development. The two avenues of research deserve funding at the
highest levels.
4. How many Hannah Polings are out there?
The short answer is that nobody knows. However, there is emerging data to
suggest that she is not alone.
Dr. Shoffner will be presenting his experience with 37 patients with
combined autism and mitochondrial dysfunction at the AAN meeting in Chicago
this April. 65% of his referrals are positive for mitochondrial dysfunction.
Of course, his yield is subject to referral bias as a mito expert, so the
prevalence of mitochondrial dysfunction in Autism is surely less than 65%.
The best estimate to date of the prevalence of mitochondrial dysfunction in
autistic patients comes from Oliviera et al. in a population of 120, 5 of 69
(or 7.2%) showed mitochondrial dysfunction. If this is generalized to the US
estimate of 1 million patients with ASDs, then the number of kids like
Hannah could be 72,000! Isn’t this worth further study?
Dr. Shoffner furthermore advocates, along with us, that vaccination is
important even for kids with mitochondrial dysfunction. I would argue that
you should not give nine at one time and that none of them should contain
Thimerosal (mercury).
5. Thimerosal—On or Off the Table?
I don’t want to dwell on mercury, as this theory is not why HHS conceded
Hannah’s case (imo). Dr. DiContanzo just wrote an interesting blog about how
his opinion of mercury in vaccines has changed
(http://drugs.about.com/b/2008/03/08/mercury-in-vaccines-and-autism-the-burd
en-of-proof-may-shift.htm).
My opinion is that mercury is a potent neurotoxin. Therefore, don’t inject
it into kids! Interestingly, basic research studies have shown that
Thimerosal toxicity occurs through mitochondrial pathways. Officials point
to the large epidemiology studies as proof that there is no link between
thimerosal and autism. However, these studies are not powered to disprove
the null hypothesis when considering that the mitochondrial autistic
population may be just a small percent of the case totals. Remember that
while the CDC sponsored Verstraten study is hyped as a negative study, it
DID find a statistically significant increase in childhood tics in those
exposed to higher doses of thimerosal.
6. Hannah was destined to regress? Or was she?
Some experts have already stated that ‘mitochondrial disease’ is
degenerative so the vaccine reaction was just the start of an inevitable
decline. This was neither the opinion of Dr. Richard Kelley at KKI nor Dr.
John Shoffner. In fact, the markers that led us down the mitochondrial trail
(inc AST but not ALT, low serum bicarbonate, and slight increased CK,
increase in the alanine to lysine ratio on PAA) are no longer present.
Furthermore, in our pilot study (unpublished but mentioned in the J child
neurol paper), Dr. Frye (the statistician for our study and also a child
neurologist) found a non-significant trend that AST decreased toward normal
with increasing age. With further studies we hoped to examine the hypothesis
that this abnormality may be representative of a developing/immature
biochemical pathway present in some children.
7. Triple Hit Hypothesis—#1Underlying genetic susceptibility #2Insult must
occur during specific developmental period #3 A certain vaccination or
combination thereof is the environmental trigger (?vaccine component like
thimerosal ?direct immune stim/fever reaction ?live virus reaction?)
The implication is that Hannah’s type of autism requires a genetic
susceptibility and properly timed insult to manifest disease. We have not
subjected Hannah to another muscle biopsy or re-examined ox phos functional
assays that were published in the paper. I can inform your readers though
that the serum biochemical markers have resolved, growth resumed and
continues along a normal trajectory, and there have been no other episodes
of regression since 2000. We are however left with autism and later in 2006,
epilepsy.
It is recommended that studies be initiated immediately to screen siblings
of cases to identify biochemical markers so as to identify potential
screening tests.
I agree with the mainstream that my daughter’s case has raised many
intelligent discussions and questions. I’m very proud of her for starting
this discussion. Our hope is that further research into this case and others
like it, we will be also to find screening tests to prevent what happened to
my daughter from happening to anybody else.
(Dr. Poling acknowledges the editorial comments and insightful suggestions
of Dr. Richard E. Frye. He also would like to declare his conflicts of
interest. First of all, he is the father of Hannah Poling. Dr. Poling has
also accepted consultancy or speakers honoraria from Pfizer, Eisai,
Ortho-McNeil, Biogen, Teva, Immunex (now Amgen), and Allergan.)
PS While I thought it useful to clarify some of the neurological issues
raised by the government’s concession of my daughter’s case, please
understand that I will not be able to respond to individual comments posted.
Thank-you. Jon

The funny thing about Truth is that it has a way of getting out, escaping confinement, growing like a seed sprout towards the sunlight. And, like a sprout, it pokes first one tender shoot up towards the light, and then another, gaining strength and finding its direction from the sunlight it is reaching for. Sometimes, however, the obstacles overhead (for example, concrete paving, tramping jack boots, broad leaf herbicides) are just too much for the tender sprout and it fails while its twins try reaching for the light elsewhere. As long as there is light, there will be some seed that makes it. Unless, of course, the seed has been genetically altered and has contaminated its brothers and cousins and distant relations so that there are no more of its kind.
That, of course, is part of the threat from genetically engineered (called variously “GM” or (“GMO” or “GE” )foods: their modifications wander, not only inside the nucleus of the cell coding for novel effects never before seen (like cancer-producing proteins, for example) but that DNA wanders into the wind through pollen and pollinators changing crops and weeds forever since currently there is no way known to reverse the genetic changes which “volunteer” pollen produces in the same and different species.
Animals (that means birds and bees and wasps and horses and pigs and chickens and you and me and our children) are impacted in ways which we know and ways which we do not know yet. Using the “Precautionary Principle” of Codex, GM foods would all be illegal because they have not been proven to be safe. Indeed, the US, which forbids indicating a food has GM ingredients because they know that consumers would reject it, approves all GM foods once a patent is obtained because then-President George H. W. Bush declared GM foods to be identical to normal foods. Since then, the FDA follows the same principle: a voluntary
Certificate of Equivalence (CE)” may be applied for and obtained by the owners of a patent on a GM food, but it is only a frill. Whether there is, or is not, a CE on file somewhere, GM crops and animals are allowed in the food supply by the US Government without a shred of safety testing on their impact on animals, plants, the environment or humans. Astonishingly, the FDA and other agencies assert, without having examined the data, that these genetically manipulated foods are safe. All independent science with which I am familiar makes it clear that not only are these foods not safe, they are downright dangerous to your health and that of the environment.
Romania, unlike most of the rest of the European Community, had bought into the GM story lock, stock and agricultural barrel. Read the report below to see how things are a’changin!
Then consider that, as we told you in our eye-witness reports from Oslo in February, 2007 and Accra in February, 2008, other countries, including an emerging African coalition, are not so happy with the FDA’s bland friendliness to GM crops and animals. These days, because of this turning tide, the Biotech Industry (think, for example, Monsanto) is often described as “beleaguered”. So may it be! Beleaguered to the point of legal and economic barriers to the manufacture, planting and selling of ANY genetically modified food or food anywhere in the world. Beleaguered to the point of a total ban on pharmaceutical GM crops and animals like the drug producing rice that contaminated much of Louisiana’s rice country for 5 years before Bayer, a major player in GM and GM drugs bothered to inform either the noq-contaminated neighboring rice growers or the end users, the consuemr who got this stuff in their rice bowls.
Beleagured to the point that the drug-producing cows in New Zealand, a once pristine pesticide and GM free island contaminated by 3 years of “accidental” shipement of GM seeds by the US, no longer have a market for their milk and cattle can return to being cattle, not dangerous factories of dangerous drugs.
The Natural Solutions Foundation will be at the next Codex meeting dealing with GM foods to participate with, and help lead, the coalition of African pro-health countries from April 26-May 2, 2008 in Ottawa Canada. At the last meting, Africa’s newly emerging coalition (which we have spent the last 3 years supporting and building in Africa and at Codex meetings) led Switzerland, Norway, Russia and Japan, among others, in opposing the US assertion that foods on the market are regarded as safe.
Good for them. Now the next (and much larger) task is for this pro-health coalition is to hold the line on this issue (which is really a set up by the US for tanking any country which keeps our GM foods to the World Trade Organization and socking them with huge trade sanctions until they cave in). We’ll be there to give you daily eye witness reports if you send us there!
Your tax deductible donations are urgently needed. Click here (http://drrimatruthreports.com/index.php?page_id=189) to help assure your voice and your interests will be at Codex and you will hear what actually happens there! Thanks for your support.

Romania reconsiders its welcome of biotech corn
By James Kanter
Published: March 26, 2008
PARIS: Romania, which has been one of the most receptive markets on a skeptical Continent for genetically modified crops, is moving toward a reversal of its stance, in what would be another setback for the beleaguered biotechnology industry in Europe.
Attila Korodi, Romania’s environment minister, said he would ask a committee of experts Thursday to revaluate a gene-altered version of corn, MON810, the only modified crop that has been approved for commercial planting in the European Union.
During an interview, Korodi said not enough studies had been done to gauge the effects of the corn on ecological systems in Romania, including in the Black Sea area.
In addition, he said, banning biotech crops could increase rural prosperity by allowing farmers to take advantage of a growing global demand for organic feed and foodstuffs, which, in addition to being unaltered, are grown without chemical pesticides or fertilizers.
Such products can command higher prices – although experts question whether farming practices in much of Eastern Europe are developed enough for such a specialized market.

“I think becoming an organic country is a good thing,” Korodi said. “We have to analyze the true costs of growing GMOs,” he added, since the technology was potentially harmful to the environment and had become widely unpopular in Romania.
An actual ban would still be some ways off and could require parliamentary support, he said.
But its consideration, coming a month after France imposed a similar ban on the corn variety, would be another obstacle for the industry in Europe, where there is widespread skepticism about biotech foods. Specifically, it would hurt the U.S. seed company Monsanto, which produces MON810.
Romania, the biggest corn grower in the 27-member EU by hectares under cultivation, represents a vast potential market for Monsanto and other biotechnology companies. MON810 is designed to combat pests and enhance yields.
“We would be very disappointed to see Romania following France even in attempting to ban such a product, which has proved its benefits to farmers in Romania,” said Cristina Cionga, the manager for public and government affairs for Monsanto Romania. “Our products are completely safe for planting and consumption.”
EU authorities approved MON810 for cultivation a decade ago, but since then four EU countries – Austria, Greece, Hungary and, most recently, France – have imposed bans. Poland operates restrictions on the sale and import of gene-altered seeds, and very little cultivation takes place there.
Most of these countries, including France and Hungary, which are the second- and third-biggest corn growers in Europe, justified the bans on the grounds that the crops potentially could harm soils and reduce biodiversity.
Even in countries that do not operate formal bans, there are impediments.
Italy, which grows roughly the same amount of corn as Hungary, has delegated decisions on biotech crops to its regions, many of which operate de facto bans. In Tuscany, for example, the supply of gene-altered produce is prohibited in catering for schools, hospitals, convalescent homes and in local and regional government offices.
Romania planted only about 325 hectares, or 800 acres, of MON810 in 2007 and this year is expected to plant about 10,000 hectares. That still represents just a fraction of the roughly 2 million to 3 million hectares of corn planted each year in Romania.
Even so, Korodi’s strategy would mark a major change for Romania.
Over the past decade, Romania became the largest producer of gene-altered crops in Europe because of large amounts of modified soy, mostly produced by Monsanto and Pioneer, a unit of DuPont. That crop was approved for use by farmers in Romania but not in the EU, and the government had to pledge to stop growing the crop when Romania joined the bloc in 2007.
In the future, Korodi said, farmers – particularly those with small plots in mountainous areas – could prosper from selling smaller quantities of unmodified produce, as it would command higher prices on local and international markets.
“GMOs mean crops are cheaper to produce,” Korodi said. “But if we look at the market price that GMO-free crops earn, and we look at the costs to biodiversity of using GMOs, then non-GMO crops are better,” he said.
Early this month the Hungarian agriculture minister, Joszef Graf, said his country’s seed industry earned 25 percent more by selling seeds that had not been cross-pollinated with altered crops.
But Nathalie Moll, a spokeswoman for Europabio, a group representing the biotechnology industry, said seed companies had disputed the minister’s statement.
Klaus Reinsberg, a senior researcher at the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe, said growing nonbiotech crops was often more expensive, requiring more manual labor to remove weeds and to control pests. But labor costs in Romania remain low compared to other parts of the EU, potentially giving the country a competitive advantage.Even so, Romania would still have to prove it could grow produce to high standards for specialized markets and finicky consumers, and deliver those goods to markets on time.
“Countries like Romania and Ukraine are dreaming of producing organic products and to export them for the profits they can bring,” Reinsberg said. “But organic products can have diseases and fungus.” He also said that a big problem for countries like Romania was a “lack of logistics.”
Despite such hurdles, environmental groups welcomed signs of a change of heart in Romania.
“It marks a seismic change,” said Geert Ritsema, who campaigns against genetic engineering for Greenpeace International in Amsterdam.
Our highly innovative Citizens Petition asks the FTC to use its powers to prevent false and misleading advertising in order to STOP THE VACCINE INDUSTRY FROM SAYING THAT VACCINES ARE SAFE, EFFECTIVE OR PROVEN METHODS OF PREVENTING DISEASE AND PROMOTING HEALTH. Click here (http://drrimatruthreports.com/index.php?p=507) to read this ground breaking legal approach to stopping the vaccine madness.
A Citizens Petition is a legal assault on the US Government to force it to take the desired action. If the FTC does hold the hearings we ask for and take the desired actions, well and good. If it does not, that means we have “exhausted our administrative remedies” and the case is ripe (as they say) for Federal Court.
Once we have an FTC Docket Number for this Citizens Petition, it’s your turn. “Mouse Warriors” be prepared! Then you can sign it and pour forth a tsunami of grassroots support for changing the terrain on which the battle for vaccination freedom is fought from our bodies to our laws! But that will cost money so when you sign, we will ask you to make a “War Chest” donation (tax deductible, as always, of course) of at least $10.
Our first Citizens Petition on illegal US/Codex “HARMonization” and Dietary Supplements has nearly 200,000 sign-ones! But, to be honest, we made a mistake: since we did not ask for your financial support when you signed it, we do not now have the money to take it to Federal Court. We’ve learned and we are smarter now. With our new Citizens Petition, however, we will build the war chest as we build the number of people who join the Citizens Petition. Can you sign if you do not donate to the War Chest? Sure. Do we need the War Chest filled? You bet! It’s another way to protect and expand health freedom. We think it has great potential to end the vaccine lies since the FTC successfully took on the tobacco industry and other giants in the past in similar situations. Either way, we are building a case for Health Freedom in a novel and powerful way.
We’ll let you know as soon as we’re ready to start that tsunami of netroots support and filling that War Chest. Watch for it.
Thanks for your continuing activism.
